Summoning up more than 20 years of Japan's most dramatic history, the geisha's story uncovers a hidden world of eroticism and enchantment, exploitation and degradation. It moves from a small fishing village in 1929 to the glamorous and decadent Kyoto of the 30s and on to postwar New York.

Always a favourite, read it many times! I never had much interest in Asian history at all until I read this book... Anyway, requested as a relay (oddly enough, vampire relay) book, and off to a BookObsessed member in Finland...

Thank you so much jennymidget! I've seen this one as a movie and I'm interested in seeing whether the book is even better.

Enchanting book. The book was quite similar to the movie but more descriptive. Couldn't put it down at some spots as I had to read more to know what would happen.
