The story was rather cute, if not laugh out loud funny, but it fell apart at the end with its surprising (and not in a good way) ending.

The book was okay. I had to struggle through parts of it. But overall it was fine.

Journal Entry 4 by savannahblue from Portland, Oregon USA on Saturday, August 30, 2003
it's here! arrived today, so it's not lost in the wilds of the postal system after all! will log in again after i've read it.

Journal Entry 5 by savannahblue from Portland, Oregon USA on Tuesday, September 2, 2003
ahhhh. . .i really, really wanted to like this book, and there were moments when i did. . .he writes well enough, but it just didn't hold my interest. sort of charming though, feels very british somehow. . .have to admit one of my favorite bits was the author's photo on the back cover - sending on to EmpressJess, next in line.

Release planned for Wednesday, September 03, 2003 at US mail, to fellow bookcrosser in Lake Oswego, Oregon USA.

sending on to the next bookring member, EmpressJess. happy reading!

This book arrived while I was on vacation, and I read it as soon as I came home. It's a hoot! Rupert Everett is a fine actor, but he's a great writer. I laughed all the way through, and will be lending it out to a few friends before it's ready for release.

Journal Entry 10 by EllyMae58 from El Cajon, California USA on Thursday, September 25, 2003
Rupert arrived today! *sigh* I wish...it was actually just his book.

Going on my bookray-to-be-read pile. I'll get to it as soon as I read the 3 ahead of it!

Journal Entry 11 by EllyMae58 from El Cajon, California USA on Sunday, October 5, 2003
Well, I made several attempts over the last few days to read this book. I got through the first two chapters and don't feel like reading any more. I don't think it's so much the book as it is my reading-state-of-mind these days. I'm having a hard time concentrating on anything I pick up to read.
I'm going to go ahead and pass this on to PalmersPal this week. I see no reason to keep it any longer.
Thanks for sharing it!

Journal Entry 12 by PalmersPal from Ramona, California USA on Wednesday, October 8, 2003
I just received this book in the mail today. I'm really looking forward to reading it. I'll get to it just as soon as I can. Thanks so much for sharing, grover3d.

Journal Entry 13 by PalmersPal from Ramona, California USA on Wednesday, December 10, 2003
I loved this book! It had an autobiographical tone, yet some of the situations were so outrageous that I hope for Rupert's sake, that they were pure fiction. Hysterical book. I'll try to mail it on in the next day or so.

Journal Entry 14 by PalmersPal from Ramona, California USA on Saturday, December 20, 2003
Okay, finally got this one ready to go. Will either mail it today or Monday. Sorry for the delay.

Journal Entry 15 by AmberLee17 from Stockton, California USA on Sunday, January 18, 2004
*blush* This book arrived between Christmas and New Year's, but I didn't realize that I hadn't journalled it. It was frothy and outrageous and did take away some of the grimeness of other book ring/rays that are in house at the moment. A little too over the top for me, but ... diverting. Thanks for sharing, I'm glad to have read it.

Journal Entry 16 by Starry-Starry from Llandrindod Wells, Wales United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 10, 2004
Arrived in Wales safe and sound - thanks Amberlee17. I have three bookrays in the house at the moment, but will get to this as soon as possible. I also have another Rupert Everett book in my TBR pile, so whether I read that or not depends on how good this one is, looking forward to finding out.

Journal Entry 17 by Starry-Starry from Llandrindod Wells, Wales United Kingdom on Friday, February 20, 2004
This was an amusing, easy to read book. The characters were a little stereotypical and it tried a bit too hard to be outrageous, but I enjoyed it. The best part though was the little sketches that illustrate all the chapters.

Glad to have read it and I'll happily sit down and read The Hairdressers of St Tropez sometime in the future. Thanks grover3d, I'll pass it onto Boucli when I have her address.

Journal Entry 18 by boucli from Toulouse, Midi-Pyrénées France on Monday, March 1, 2004
Just arrived here at work...people are jealous here because I keep receiving pakcages from all over the world, lol !!!
I just love the picture of the back cover...
reading very soon !

Journal Entry 19 by boucli from Toulouse, Midi-Pyrénées France on Monday, March 29, 2004
I tried really hard, but I couldn't get into it...

So it's best that I send the book to the next person...
This book is leaving for Portugal, where it will meet Moimeme on her way back from Tasmania...

Journal Entry 20 by Moimeme from Famões, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Monday, May 17, 2004
This book was waiting me when I arrived home from the other side of the world. It had a beautiful postcard and bookmarker in it. Thank you Boucli;))
I'll start it right away

Journal Entry 21 by Moimeme from Famões, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Thursday, May 27, 2004
Eventhough I had to struggle through parts of this book, I found myself laughing out loud some other times. I do agree that the characters were a little too stereotypical, but I enjoyed it.

I'm sending it to Puppymummy in Victoria, Australia now.

Journal Entry 22 by puppymummy from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, June 15, 2004
Arrived safely in Melbourne today - finally a book that i remember signing up for! A whole heap have arrived recently, all at once, but I promise to get to this as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 23 by puppymummy from Melbourne CBD, Victoria Australia on Tuesday, August 3, 2004
This book was like nothing I have ever read before. As I was reading it I thought several times that the best word to describe it was 'bemusing'. However, I really really enjoyed it - and I have been having trouble reading things recently, so I hope that means the tide has turned.
The ending was completely bizarre, as if the due date for the book had arrived and that was it, no more writing was to be done. I was disappointed by that, but overall i really enjoyed this and did find myself laughing out loud a few times (much to my partner's disgust!). Thanks for sharing, grover3d!

Journal Entry 24 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Monday, August 23, 2004
Mmmm, Rupert has arrived at my place!
The quote on the front sounds promising - "actor Rupert Everett writes as well (or as good as) as he looks." This should be great, based on that!! Hee hee.

Journal Entry 25 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Saturday, October 30, 2004
It's been quite some time since I read a book with pictures!

Rupert's fiction, with surely self expression and experience reflected (right?), only loosely held my attention. The occasionally amuzing, and yet sad and distressing at the same time, antics of Rhys and fellow cast trotted along to be a light read.

The childhood and adolescent wanderings through the world of realising one's sexuality and preferences, and the flashbacks to that time of wanting a wedding dress for Christmas, are probably want kept me reading.

Will be sending off in the next few days.

Journal Entry 26 by LaRue from Medford, New York USA on Saturday, November 13, 2004
Arrived yesterday and I began it immediately - I'm halfway through it already and really enjoying it. It's not laugh-out-loud funny, but it's "highly amusing, darling".

Journal Entry 27 by LaRue from Medford, New York USA on Tuesday, November 16, 2004
I enjoyed this book, just what I needed now, something trifling and amusing. Gawdess has her PM turned off, so I am sending this to Rampallion tomorrow!

Journal Entry 28 by rampallion from Evanston, Illinois USA on Tuesday, November 30, 2004
Just got back from vacation to find this waiting for me! Thanks! I've wanted to read it for a long time.

Journal Entry 29 by rampallion from Evanston, Illinois USA on Saturday, December 4, 2004
Silly and entertaining. I even laughed at the disclaimer on the copyright page: "HELLO DARLING, ARE YOU WORKING? is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual events or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. This book is based on a series of thinly disguised lies."

I enjoyed the over-the-topness of it all and the funny little line drawings. And I agree that the author photo is wonderful. Unfortunately, Rupert has since gotten something called a "brow lift," which has resulted in his very own page on awfulplasticsurgery.com.

This will go to the next person on the list in the coming week.

Released on Wednesday, December 08, 2004 at about 1:00:00 PM BX time (GMT-06:00) Central Time (US & Canada) at Controlled Release in Controlled release, to another bookcrosser Controlled Releases.

RELEASE NOTES:

Sent to titacookie in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada via air mail.

Journal Entry 31 by titacookie from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Monday, January 3, 2005
Got back from a holiday trip to find this waiting in our mail. Thanks, Rampallion! Can't wait to tuck into it.

010605 Update: By the time he was eight he knew he would never be a Great Actress. That has got to be one of the best opening lines I have read in a long time. And from that first sentence, I was hooked. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, the book offered captivating characters and fascinating stories. The ending was a little "Wha-?!" but what really cost it points was the typos. Maybe Rupert/Rhys and his copyeditor indulged in some of the book's *ehem* pharmaceuticals in an effort to finish the book in a pinch? heh.

kalipriestess and tootshelling both asked to be skipped, so sending this on to jendudley by the end of the week.

Journal Entry 32 by jendudley from Edinburg, Texas USA on Tuesday, January 18, 2005
