A very readable, often funny, pop-anthropology look at Englishness and the English. Some astute observations, especially on humour and self-deprecation, and the rules which govern (and restrict) our social interaction. Perhaps too ready to make sweeping generalisations, and to see English society as static. Not sure all Fox's observations are correct - not universally, at least.

Interesting reading, although I am not convinced that all the author terms "englishness" is unique to England; and at times she makes statements without expaining where she got that idea from. All in all this book is not without its merit - I found several explainations as to why my interaction with the English over the last 35 years has not always been a total success:-)
