Inderdaad heel spannend boek over kinnesinne en fraude in de wetenschap, maar ook een avonturiersroman

Ceruleam gave me this book at the big meeting in Castricum yesterday. Thanks!

The first William Boyd I read, very pleasant reading I must say. The writer uses different perpectives to tell the story but that didn't bother me at all. It does not surprise me to read about fiddling with researchresults or cheating with mathematic formulae. In hindsight I see the simularities in Hopes and Johns work. Curious title by the way, it has such a small role in this book.
I would like to read other books by this author.

I'm not sure where this book has been since the meeting in Groningen. Maybe Dutch-flybabe didn't release it there after all (I often have that happen, too!). In any case, I picked it up off the table in Castricum today, intending to wild release it, perhaps at OBCZ Lux in Nijmegen. However, it sounds rather interesting, so I might end up reading it myself first.

For some reason, I wasn't really expecting to like this, perhaps because not one of my Goodreads / BookCrossing friends has read it or maybe because I had never heard of it. I expected it to be a book I could start, give up on and pass on through BookCrossing. Now I'm not sure I want to pass it on at all. I found the part of the book set in Africa fascinating and gripping and the intelligent references made it especially interesting. I also enjoyed all the references to mathematics and turbulence interesting. I think the book was published round about the time chaos theory came to public notice. I was also surprised to read about Hope's work on dating hedgerows as I remember my medieval history professor telling about the theory when I was studying in 1982. Checking it online, Hooper's formula was published in 1974, so I'm not sure if that fits into the timeline of this book. Another snippet that interested me was the Arabic origins of algebra and algorithm; obvious once you know. Another thing that amused me was Mallabar, surely a reference to Mrs Malaprop in Sheridan's play The Rivals as he mixes sayings such as "You count your chickens before you leap."

So, all in all, an enjoyable and intelligent book.

Was still on the table at the end of the meeting. As there is not so much space for the books I took it along to release it.

It may be that I will read it first, but it could also be that I will release it soon in or around Wageningen where a lot of foreign students can be found ;)

Released 7 yrs ago (11/11/2016 UTC) at Boekspot Hoog Catharijne (GESLOTEN / CLOSED) in Utrecht, Utrecht Netherlands
