from the back cover:
A beautiful, haunting evocation of the medieval Japan of Lian Hearn's imagination, this thrilling follow-up to
Grass for His Pillow and Across the Nightingale Floor takes us deeper into the complex loyalties that bind its characters from birth. Filled with adventure and surprising twists of plot and fortune, it also provides a rare glimpse beyond the Three Countries, as outside influences begin to intrude upon this isolated realm ...

Otori Takeo and Shirakawa Kaede are more resolved than ever to strengthen their domains. Yet their actions have enraged Arai Daiichi, the warlord who controls most of the Three Countries, and have insulted the nobleman Lord Fujiwara.
Brilliance of the Moon follows Takeo and Kaede as they attempt to consolidate their powers and fulfill the holy woman's prophecy: Your lands will stretch from sea to sea, but peace comes at the price of bloodshed. Five battles will buy you peace, four to win and one to lose ...

I enjoyed the story. The beauty of the country really comes through in these books, and they evoke a real sense of medieval Japan. Again, like in the other books, the reader is not fully drawn into the story as the narrator writes with too much detachment, even though it is supposed to be emotional.

I like that the fantasy side is a minor part of the story, and that it is set in an identifiable period. I think it would make these books more accessible to a wider audience, like those (such as myself) normally put off a bit by the fantasy genre.

My house has too many books in it.

Correction: my house is too small for me to organise the books in it properly.

I put this one somewhere safe, where it remained for about a year. I then found it again, read it, thoroughly enjoyed it, and put it somewhere safe to journal it.

I found it again today.

A wonderful book, with a lovely tinge of future despair - not only from the prophesy, but also from the encroachment of the world outside. I like a story with realism; happy ever after endings are all right, but if you have courageous, resourceful, intelligent heroes and heroines, you like to think they will have other challenges to face in the future, otherwise they'd be bored!

RockDg9, I am forever in your debt - ask, and it is yours.
