I can't get away without reading this -- history is interesting.
------
Well, I'm currently halfway through reading, and finding it a bit of a struggle. In between getting impatient at all the hand-wringing alas and alack (which certainly is not going to let up before the end of the book), I couldn't help laughing at the author's vision of the perfect pinnacle of life -- a country house with a dozen servants, and cap-in-hand peasants! Did she really take this seriously? Really, "Morton" is the most ridiculous character in the book, I think.
Nonetheless, it's fascinating to find here the originals (?) of so many lesbian archetypes that were recycled in both pulpy and "serious" fiction for the next 50+ years (I've come across a few of them in my own reading, but mostly am familiar with this by hearsay). We have, so far, dear sexless Puddle with her square figure and square shoes; and Angela, the straight woman of little virtue who toys with Stephen's love because of dissatisfaction with her husband. More to come, no doubt.
------
Finished it -- glad I read it. There are flashes of good observation there, but mostly, what a dated view of the world!
