Part one of Westerfeld's excellent Uglies trilogy.

Tally is Ugly and she's hanging out to become Pretty. But this isn't just an idle wish. Tally will become a Pretty on her 16th birthday, thanks to an operation that will give her big eyes, perfect skin and a fabulous life to match. She'll move from thinking up tricks and japes in the Uglyville dormitories to partying with all the other Pretties in New Pretty Town. Fabulous, eh? Tally's friend Shay isn't so sure. Shay wants Tally to run away with her to the Smoke, where it is rumoured that nobody is in charge and nobody is Pretty. When Shay runs away, Tally is put in a difficult situation. If she doesn't lead the authorities (the Specials) to the Smoke so they can recover the runaways, they won't let her have the operation and Tally will be forever Ugly. Tally has no choice but to betray Shay. However, Tally's real conflict begins when she gets to the Smoke and begins to discover the hidden sacrifices of becoming Pretty. Tally's perspective of the city she has lived in all her live is dramatically altered, but is it too late?

One of the overriding themes of the series, and particularly 'Uglies' is the perception and discussion of beauty. As plastic surgery and airbrushing becomes evermore commonplace, discussion of a society where Pretty is the norm is very relevant. There's also some great discussion of man's environmental impact and increasing alienation from the natural world. This makes it sound very heavy, but it's a very fun read. With hoverboards!

How it works

- If you wish to be added to the list, please PM me with your location and postage preferences.
- We will kick off once we have 5(ish) members.
- I will send out each book in the trilogy (Uglies, Pretties, Specials) at approximately 1 month intervals (or sooner if requested).
- You will be sending the books to the person who appears after you in the list, so you need to PM them to get their address.
- Not everyone wants to read all three books so please check the individual list for each book to see who you're sending to. You may be sending each book to a different person!
- It's not a race, but please read and send the book on as speedily as you can.
- Please journal the book once you have received it (so we all know where it currently is) and again when you have read it (so we know what you thought of it).
- If you're the last person on the list, then please PM me and I'll decide whether to ask for new members or get it sent back to me.

Received these books in the mail today. I'm in the middle of a book right now, but I should finish it this week and then I'll start on these. Should be able to finish all three within 1 month. Thanks!

I finished this book this week while I was on vacation. These books are a little more sci-fi than my usual taste, but they're still decent reads. I enjoyed reading about the scientific changes that are made to "pretties". I've already contacted the next participant and I will send her all three of the books when I'm finished (I'm already working on book 3).

SPOILER ALERT--

One thing that I thought was weird and/or unbelievable about this book was that Maddy was able to come up with a cure so quickly. Why hadn't she worked on a cure years earlier if it was so easy to come up with?

Thanks for sharing these books!

Unfortunately, I am too busy with college right now to read this book.. I was really looking forward to it. But I will pass it along to keep it moving.
