Part melodrama and part parable, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven weaves together three stories, all told about the same man: 83-year-old Eddie, the head maintenance person at Ruby Point Amusement Park. As the novel opens, readers are told that Eddie, unsuspecting, is only minutes away from death as he goes about his typical business at the park. Albom then traces Eddie's world through his tragic final moments, his funeral, and the ensuing days as friends clean out his apartment and adjust to life without him. In alternating sections, Albom flashes back to Eddie's birthdays, telling his life story as a kind of progress report over candles and cake each year. And in the third and last thread of the novel, Albom follows Eddie into heaven where the maintenance man sequentially encounters five pivotal figures from his life (a la A Christmas Carol). Each person has been waiting for him in heaven, and, as Albom reveals, each life (and death) was woven into Eddie's own in ways he never suspected. Each soul has a story to tell, a secret to reveal, and a lesson to share. Through them Eddie understands the meaning of his own life even as his arrival brings closure to theirs.

I bought it a lot of time ago, but went on my TBR and I almost forgot it was there... well, now that it isn't on my TBR anymore, I must tell you I liked it. It is a strange book, gives you a particular vision on what coul happen "later on". All endings are also beginnings... I agree ;)

Received as part of a bookring by lizzyblack. Thanks for sharing it -- and thanks for the cute bookmark :-)
This book was very intersting -- easy to read and hard to put down... the perfect summertime read! It certainly gives a new point of view of what heaven could be. I found myself turning page after page to find out who Eddie would meet next in heaven and what they would have to teach him. Interestingly enough, in Albom's vision of heaven we are not all-knowing once we die. There are still lessons to be learned even in the afterlife. It gives you some things to think about in this life and possibly for the next.
I have just PMed the next person in the ring and will send it on once I hear back.

Received this in the mail today. I LOVE the bookmark, lizzyblack. You are so creative! :o) I have another book ring in front of this, but I'm heading for Destin, Florida next week so this will be going along with me. Thanks so much for sending it on HeresDeb.
Such a great book and such a quick read! I started this the last night of my vacation in Destin, Florida and finished it during the day of travel home yesterday. I've seen this book in bookstores for ages, but never took interest. I'm so glad I got a chance to read it! Will PM Bjorg and send it on as soon as I get an address. Thanks!
Mailed to Bjorg on 08/07/07.

It's such a lovely book, and so interesting. I'm really sorry for the delay. I've just PMed to the next person. Thank you again lizzyblack for sharing
The book is in Catania.
I really enjoyed this book (and Lizzy's bookmark), even if I don't believe in life after death. Anyway, the story is very sweet because shows us that all people are related to eachother and every simple life can be important. Each person the main character meets in heaven teachs him (and us) a lesson about life, love and friendship.
This book begins with an end, because the main character, Eddie, dies in the first pages; but every end is a beginning.
A fun note for this is is that I learned a lot about amusement park, because Eddie, spent his life as mantainance man in it.

Beautiful, romantic, moving story! And lovely bookmark, Lizzy!! :-)
Just found it in the mailbox...
Darn! I wanted to dismiss it like some kind of romantic nonsense. I still think it is, but at least it was quick and painless (also, the main guy was nice ;-)).
In the post, leaving today :-)
Book received!I will start it in a few days!
I've just finished this little book.It was the second by Mitch Albom I read.
I really enjoyed it 'cause I've always believed in a sort of life after death and I hope something like this story will happen for real!
The following is one of the sentence I've note down on my quotation book:
"The only time we waste is the time we spend thinking we are alone"
Liz thanks for the bookmark! Your book will come back home soon!

Well, the book is back home! I'd like to thank all of you for joining and leaving me comments :) I now have to think what to do with it, I'll probably let it go in my next trip to Dublin :)
