I had to read this again as it was just lying there tempting me. But then my husband, a man that has not finished a work of fiction in the 15 years since I've known him, picked it up and read it. It was quite a milestone at our house. As this is one of the top 100 books challenged books on the ALA's banned books list, I am going to include it in my banned books bookbox.

Can you believe that I've never read this? I'm removing it from the Banned Books box. Thanks!

10 out of 10

I enjoyed this book immensely. When I first opened it up and saw how much text was crammed in per page, I thought it would be daunting. Once I got two or three chapters in, I could hardly put it down.

I loved the Boo Radley storyline. I loved the idea of these wonderfully imaginative children acting out what they believed to be his life. Children in a world before video games.

I loved Atticus' parenting style and his wisdom.

I loved Cal and the scene at the church and how proud she was of "her" children.

Here's a passage that I especially enjoyed:

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. -- page 116

I will be passing this along soon.

This is such a wonderful classic story. One of my kids had to read it a year ago, so I read it again, enjoyed it thoroughly all over again. Caught this in the Top 100 Book Box, and will put it back in to continue traveling. (it enjoyed a week in sunny San Diego!)

Well, this one has made the bookbox rounds, hasn't it? I have another copy of this registered on my shelf, which I passed along to last year's Secret Santa. I haven't read this since high (junior high?) school, but I think I should have a permanent copy of my own, and I'm sure I would have a very different appreciation of it in my older adult years. So it's here to stay, at least for a while! :')

8 out of 10

While this remains a good book to educate the teens & pre-teens of today in regards to racial tensions, looking at it through an adult's eyes gives one a whole new, refreshing look at it. In all honesty, I can't remember if I read this back in school or not. I thought I did, but if so, it apparently didn't resonate enough to make a lasting impression on me at the time. I think there's something to be said about reading a book for educational purposes and reading a book for the pure pleasure of the story itself, without having to analyze every little thing about it. Now, reading it as a 40-something adult, I've gained a new appreciation for Scout, Jem, Atticus, and all the characters of Maycomb, Alabama. And I can truly appreciate the title of the book.

P.S. -- And Bluestocking, I can relate somewhat to your husband comment. My own husband, who also probably hasn't finished (much less started) a work of fiction since he graduated high school, saw that I was reading this & commented that this was probably his favorite book ever, & he then commenced telling me all about the characters & storyline. He very nearly had to pick me up off the floor after that.
