Received today, it will go on the top of my TBR pile.
Thanks
Thanks
Beautifully written but just too slow for me to read at the moment. I'll definitely get another copy some time and read it properly. Apologies for the yellow stains at the back, my 3 year old spilt orange juice and the book mopped up some of it.
Sending on to babyflylady as soon as I get her address.

I have struggled with this one. Probably not the best time at the moment. I will revisit it in the future no doubt.
Karenlea is not responding to PMs so will try one more time and then try the next person in the list.
Thanks for sharing though.

Caught! I will start it this week. Thanks!
Set in France during the second World War,"Suite Francaise "is broken up into two parts, one dealing with the French fleeing the German invasion of Paris and the second with the German occupation of a country village. At first, I thought that the book moved kind of slow. The first half deals with so many different characters, that I kind of wished it had been more limited. I much preferred the second half of the book, which was narrower in scope and I thought the be more affecting. Overall, this is a very raw and powerful book. I think that it is made even more so, knowing that the author died in Auschwitz. Also, I think this book would be especially interesting for WW2 History buffs.
I will mail this out as soon as I have an address for the next reader. Thank you to Sunlightbub for sharing!

I'm so sorry. I thought I journaled on this book before Christmas when I got back from my vacation. It's here safe and sound and I'm almost done with it! I promise to journal when I'm done.
Excellent book!! I loved everything about this book - the writing, the story and the story of the author. There was so much to take away from this book. I'll be thinking about it for a long time.
Mailed yesterday (1/21/08) to indygo88.
Thanks for offering this as a ring, sunlightbub.

Arrived today -- that was fast! Been looking forward to this one, so anxious to dig in. I've got to squeeze in a couple other reads prior to this, though! Shouldn't be too long...!
Umm...where to begin with this one?!
As some of the other readers have said, this book is well-written: easy to read, yet beautiful. I enjoyed the way some of the characters overlapped from the first section to the other. It was subtle in some cases, but interestingly so. I've read several novels dealing with WWII, but I think this was the first from the point of view of the French occupation, and it was interesting in its own right. However, I also agree with previous readers in that it was a hard novel to get into -- fairly descriptive and not a lot of "action", thus making it somewhat difficult to slog through.
But having said that, I think the inclusion of the appendices in the back were extremely insightful, and having read them (esp. the correspondence letters), I got a whole new appreciation of the story. As indicated, this book was originally meant to include 5 different sections, had the author lived to complete them. As published, the two included sections did seem a bit disjointed & incomplete, and it's a shame that the book was never able to be completed as intended.
My favorite passage of the novel was near the end, in Lucile's summation of a soldier: "...there's a world of difference between the young man I'm looking at now and the warrior of tomorrow. It's a truism that people are complicated, multifaceted, contradictory, surprising, but it takes the advent of war or other momentous events to be able to see it. It is the most fascinating and the most dreadful of spectacles..."
Thank you, sunlightbub, for passing this book along as a ring. I will be sending it on its way in today's mail to ealasaidmae!

It arrived today! I'm reading a ring now, then this one.
I read the Appendices first and they made me so sad that I put the book aside for a few days before beginning it. Once I did start reading, I was hooked. The writing is so light and clear, despite the dark subject matter. It was a pleasure to read. I am a very character-oriented reader so I didn't mind the lack of "action." I just wanted to know how all of the people would cope and where they would end up. I am sorry that we don't have the rest of the book. I can imagine the intertwining stories getting richer and richer.

I received this book recently as part of a ring. It is now safe here in New Jersey and is next in line TBR. Thank you for sending it
Arrived. Looking forward to it! Thank you.
I just finished this morning so still absorbing aspects of the author's life and how this book came to be published...
This book will certainly stay with me a long time. I experienced similarly to other readers here-- beautifully written, it created vivid images for me. I didn't struggle with slowness, but I was also very interested quickly in the multiple characters from the beginning.
Even though I knew the circumstance of this book, I was still surprised with the abrupt ending! I am very curious how this novel would have evolved. Just makes me feel about the loss-- for the author's, her family, many other people, on and on.
I have the deepest gratitude for her trucking through this work, and all those who supported bringing this to be published.
Thanks for sharing this with me! I will be mailing this home because the other bookcrossers have read it now.
