Purchased 7/12/2006 from QPB.com and it's been sitting, unregistered, on my TBR shelf for far too long.

Book Description: The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes.

The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them "the truth." After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional--but is it more true?

This felt almost like two different books. The first half talks of Pi's youth, growing up in and around the zoo, his beliefs, religion, and a little of his family. There were some interesting and even funny bits, but for the most part, it seemed tedious and was hard for me to become invested in it.

I plugged along anyway and was rewarded with the second part of the book: Pi's adventures at sea. I was fascinated from that point on and couldn't put it down. The ending was fantastic!

What an interesting book! Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down.
I guess I liked the two major parts of the book equally- I found all the information at the beginning very interesting, but the story doesn't really even seem to start until the second part begins.
Thanks for sharing!

I'll send it on as soon as possible!

I really enjoyed this. It is interesting on so many levels, and contains so much food for thought, so many interpretations to consider. I'll probably purchase a copy for my own, so I can read it again one day. Thanks for sharing, minerva1221. I'll be sending it off tomorrow to the next reader.

I LOVED this book! I must confess that this is one of those books I probably never would have read, if it wasn't for bookcrossing, but once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down!

My only wish is that I could have an adventure like that- preferably without so many people, including my family, dying.

Thanks so much minerva 1221, for sharing this with me!

I really enjoyed this book. I know several people didn't like the beginning, but I think that may have been my favorite part (except for sleeping with the meerkats)! Animals and faith are 2 of my favorite topics and here it is all wrapped up together. I also like the ending. Who's really to say what is truth and what isn't? It's all just a matter of perception!

Journal Entry 20 by Moody-Blue from Montrose, Colorado USA on Thursday, November 29, 2007
Very much looking forward to this one... thanks, everyone, for passing it on!

Journal Entry 21 by Moody-Blue from Montrose, Colorado USA on Sunday, December 9, 2007
Although most of the religious -- and all of the Indian food -- references were lost on me, I enjoyed this book over-all and would recommend it on many levels. The practical information it contained about wild animals and survival skills was fascinating to me. The Japanese investigators at the end totally cracked me up!

Contacted the next recipient and will have it on it's journey again soon.

I got this one in the mail this weekend! YAY!! I'm so excited! I think this is going to be a great break from reading for school!

I'm pretty much in love with this book! It's one of those that i dont really want to put down...but then i see my school books and read just one more chapter...but that chapter was short, so just one more. It goes like this for a while and then its way past my bed time and i still have school! SNAP!
Thanks, so much!
It's going to hang out with me for a while until i find a reader who would benefit from this one...

Journal Entry 29 by sarahjanemc from Monmouth, Oregon USA on Friday, May 2, 2008
I've passed this on to on of my staff members who is in need of a good read. I think she will love it (and bookcrossing.com)!
