Paul Auster never disappoints me.
Mr. Vertigo is the fictional autobiography of Walt, a roughnecked boy who is kidnapped from his abusive uncle by 'The Master', and initiated into the ancient art of levitation. Auster's storytelling gift is that we become so involved with his characters that by the time Walt learns to 'fly' we have ceased to hold any doubts that such an ability is attainable...but the story doesn't end there, somehow this manages to become just the backdrop for an amazing life of struggle and gamble.
'You must learn how to stop being yourself. That's where it begins, and everything else follows from that. You must let yourself evaporate. Let your muscles go limp, breathe until you feel your soul pouring out of you, and then shut your eyes...'
