8 out of 10

This is an amazingly intense page turner, very suspenseful. The main characters are both strong and weak, one minute likable, the next minute detestable. The novel highlights the enormous cultural differences for an Iranian family that moves to the US and tries to recover some semblance of what life used to be, to maintain appearances and dignity while living in a new country with strong xenophobia.

I really didn't like the ending - no spoilers - which is why I didn't give it a 10. Otherwise I felt the book was brilliant.

9 out of 10

The first thing I thought when I finished this book was what a sucker punch of a story it was. This was one of those books that burrows into you and will not let go. I can't say I enjoyed it, because let's face it, it never was going to have a happy ending, but I thought it was one of the best books I've read this year. I missed the movie when it came out, but I think I'll have to seek it out as a rental.

It's now headed back home to istop4books.
