"An exiled poet named Ka returns to Turkey and travels to the forlorn city of Kars. His ostensible purpose is to report on a wave of suicides among religious girls forbidden to wear their head scarves. But Ka is also drawn by his memories of the radiant İpek, now recently divorced. Amid blanketing snowfall and universal suspicion, Ka finds himself pursued by figures ranging from İpek's ex-husband to a charismatic terrorist. A lost gift returns with ecstatic suddenness. A theatrical evening climaxes in a massacre. And finding God may be the prelude to losing everything else. Touching, slyly comic, and humming with cerebral suspense, Snow is of immense relevance to our present moment."

I had some trouble with this book. It started going in circles and I got very confused. Of course, that's partly the point. The kinds of events that Pamuk's writing about *are* confusing and tend to go in circles. That doesn't help the reader! I didn't particularly like Ka, though I empathized with the impossible position he found himself in. I think of him as a leaf, allowing himself to be blown about on the wind. Eventually, I'll seek out other of Pamuk's books, as he's piqued my interest. But for now, I think I want something simpler!

Received from ealasaidmae. I have heard so many good things about this book. Having recently read 'My Name is Red' I will probably wait a while before tackling this but I'm sure it will be worth it.

Well, I may have waited longer than intended to read this book but I'm glad I got around to it eventually. Pamuk is not the easiest writer to get to grips with but very rewarding and thought provoking. A couple of years ago I listened to "The Museum of Innocence " which I loved and on a recent visit to Istanbul I was amazed to discover that the museum actually exists (but sadly didn't have time to visit).
