Journal Entry 1 by concertina8 from Wien Bezirk 13 - Hietzing, Wien Austria on Friday, May 04, 2007
Synopsis This novel is about a feckless young mother and her two daughters in Morocco in the 1960s. While mum immerses herself in the Sufi religion, the children begin to rebel: Bea insists on going to school while the five-year-old narrator dreams of mashed potato. I got this at the bi-annual book sale of the christ church in Vienna (one EUR per paperback!) without knowing what this is about, really. I did know that it had been made into a film starring Kate Winslet and I found the title interesting enough. It was a fast read, of course. The book has a nere 180 pages (and change) and very short chapters....you know the "alright, one more before I turn in"-kind. The story is told from the younger daughters point-of-view, and the voice is sweet and likeable. Overall enjoyable.

that was a very nice read. not quite as hideous or kinky as the title would make us think. a sweet story, even if the mother worried me sometimes. I loved the secondary characters, like the henna ladies, aunty rose, etc... thanks for sharing, concertina8. what now? should it conitunue it's journey?
