A hilarious account of a young man who is left to raise his younger brother after both his parents die? Welcome to A.H.B.W.O.S.G. -even the copyright page is funny! Of course, this is not to say the book isn't sad, it is, but Mr. Eggers is able to laugh at himself, and at life in general, and we find ourselves laughing right along with him.
Mr. Eggers has a creative prose style and a fantastic, sarcastic wit. (a rhyme!)
His unbounding love for his younger brother forms the heart of the book and it is this that ultimately tells us more about Mr. Eggers and the kind of man he is than 500 pages ever can.
A wonderful book, bound to be around for years and years to come,

Hi! The book arrived in today's mail on a rather cold and dreary afternoon. Have brought it inside, warmed it up, and placed it on a shelf to wait until I've made my way through some of the books beside my chair. The chair in front of the fire place, with the cup of tea on table next to it...

Thanks! Will get back to you later with a real entry.

I have heard that no one who loses a parent ever fully gets over it. While I have never lost a parent or a child, I am close to someone who did and suffers yearly depression around the time of the parent's death. As soon as he realizes what is happening, he begins to deal with it, but the depression comes first, the realization, later.

This book focuses on the repercussions in the life of one young man (and, peripherally, on siblings) who must deal with the loss of both parents and the guardianship of his younger brother. It is often funny, always ironic, and TRUE in that strange, twisted, false, and imaginative way our minds have of handling what is beyond our comprehension.

The effort at honesty is funny, infuriating, poignant, humiliating, "heartbreaking,"...but the effort always seems sincere.

Yes, this was a heartbreaking story of the loss of both parents by the author and his siblings. And the introduction was amusing, the writing clever. I wouldn't exactly rate any of it as "genius" but most of the story was quite readable. I didn't quite get through the whole thing.
