This must be one of the greatest books ever written in the english language. I love this book so much. I began the book expecting it to be well-written, but perhaps a little stuffy and dry. I was wrong. The book is very, very readable and Stevens is one of the most delightful and humorous narrators I have ever had the pleasure to meet between the covers of a book.
I don't want to give away any part of the book or story, but let me just say that if you have not read this book already then do yourself the favor of reading it at once. If you are like me, there are always too many books and too little time, but don't put this one off. Let this quiet, powerful book move you in the way that only great literature can.

Thank you so very much for trading this book with me tamarabk. I adore Ishiguro's writing as a rule and hope (and expect) that this novel isn't the exception. I'm also extra keen to peruse it's pages because of the lusciously tantalising hint of the powerfully serene writing to come as suggested by your journal entry.

My feelings toward the narrator fluctuated with each chapter. At first I felt irritated by the stuffy way in which this proud butler led his life cloaking and supressing his emotions. I moved on to pitying him at some point and then grew to love him by the end. The story was beautifully told and I was left in anticipation of certain outcomes all the way through. I will send this book on to another Ishiguro fan to read next. Thanks tamarabk for sharing such a wonderful story.

This was the only book by Ishiguro that I'd never read; and probably one of the bests. I was completly caught by it on the first or second page; the writing was lovely, very elegant (one could understand completly the meaning of "dignity" Mr. Stevens was always talking about).
A very beautiful book, telling a somehow sad story. I could not, having seen the film, forget the voice and the face of Sir Anthony Hopkins. But that only brought the caracthers closer to me.

I finished this book last night. It was great reading, I really, really loved it!
It was impossible not to see, while I was reading, the faces and hear the voices of Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. But that was, in fact, pretty good, because then I had faces to had to the characters and it made them more real.
Stevens gives us great lessons on dignity and how to be and behave lika a gentleman.
A really interesting book, indeed. A somewhat sad story, but with no other possible ending. Life isn't always what we wish it would be, right?
