I went into a charity shop yesterday determined not even to look at the books. Why am I so weak? This one caught my eye - the story of Chris Stewart (ex drummer from Genesis) who became a sheep shearer and travel writer. It is billed as "The best 'good life abroad' book in years" on the cover - watch this space!

10 out of 10

What a thoroughly enjoyable book. The book that my other half John read from cover to cover for the first time in all his 63 years! I had to read it immediately afterwards and I'm so glad I did. I lived that adventure with Chris Stewart. I could feel the sun, smell the smells, see the characters and I felt like I'd been by his side when he rebuilt a house from the tumbledown wreck on the Andalucian mountain. Absolutely gripping. It's going to little sis Bookcloud first (if she still wants it) and then on to my second bookring.

Order of bookring so far:

1. Bookcloud (UK)
2. maggiemo (Scotland)
3. brunton11 (UK)
4. Collectorkerri (US)
5. NMReader (US)

What an enjoyable story. I liked most of the characters and Stewart's gift for describing his surroundings made me feel like I was right there with him, whether it be chasing after his runaway sheep or dealing with his colorful neighbors.

Off to NMReader tomorrow for the last leg of the journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I LOL at several passages and wondered if there might not be a farm somewhere with my name and then again thought I hoped not after some of the stories.

Thank you for sharing this book with me. I can't wait to read more by Chris Stewart.

I found this to be very enjoyable and easy to read without being fluffy. It's laugh out loud funny at parts but doesn't minimize the hardships of a rural existence in Spain. Though far from easy, the farm life Chris and Ana chose seems much better to me than an office job. But I've always been a country girl, so what can I say? Thanks for sharing - I've got hopi100's address and should be able to get this in the mail tomorrow.

This is an entertaining book. The only thing that annoyed me is that the author occasionally seems to be rather disrespectful of his neighbors. However, he is equally willing to ridicule himself when he does something foolish, and I found myself laughing at those parts too.

A gentle, slow moving story. A couple from England give up everything at home to move to Spain where they live in primitive conditions. They make a living raising sheep, collecting wild flower seeds for sale and shearing sheep for other shepherds in the area.
I will be sending the book on to the next one on the list when I get the address.

A pleasant enough read, about a british family who go and live in Spain.

However the author was very self important (which I suppose is true of anyone who feels the need to write a book about themselves). His attitude to his wife was very irritating; he first went to spain to view potential places and ended up spending all their money on a place he liked but hey - the wife will just have to get used to it and aren't I a terribly witty person. And he got sheep when she didn't want them but hey - the wife will just have to get used to it.

Arrived safely this morning. Today is a horrible overcast day, and I'd just cycled home in a freezing cold shower of rain verging on sleet, so this lovely sunny yellow book certainly cheered me up. The lemon trees will have to grow a while on my ringbook windowsill, I'm afraid, as I have also had showers of ringbooks recently, and I need to catch up.

8 out of 10

I enjoyed Chris Stewart's tales of living in Andalucia, especially as I could picture many of the scenes, imagining similar villages which I have visited in Languedoc-Roussillon, in the mountains near the Spanish border. Chris and his wife Ana, although coming from a different country, fitted well into the local community, adopting some of their customs, yet bringing something of their own too. It's a far cry from the condescending attitude of Toujours Provence, where the English couple arrives and does nothing but moan about how slowly the locals work, how they do things, and some of the strange things they eat. The food factor was here, too, but Chris was more than willing to learn from the locals, adapt to their way of doing things, in fact, accept local traditions without labelling them as quaint or old-fashioned. In fact, it totally lacked the "poor me" factor which many travel books contain. Having just read a book about the mountain people of Georgia, it is interesting to see how life is similar, with the men apparently off doing their own thing, and the women bustling around in the background, and the similarities in food: good "strong" food. No sign of the "Mediterranean diet" here!
