Sir Manuel Carmargue, one of the greatest flautists of his time, was dead. Misadventure. An old man, ankle-deep in snow, he lost his foothold in the dark, slipping into water to be trapped under a lid of ice. Only a glove remained to point to where he lay, one of its fingers rising up out of the drifts.
Theres nothing Chief Inspector Wexford likes better than an open-and-shut case. They're so restful. And yet there are one or two niggling doubts - and the disturbing return of Carmargue's daughter, now a considerable heiress, after an absence of nineteen years.
Is Wexford going to listen to that nagging inner voice of his? And if he does, what exactly does he plan to do?

bundled with an RABCK to KLL - to be read, released or whatever :o)
An extra suprise book, bundled in with 'The Etched City'. I've read at least one Ruth Rendell before (A Dark Adapted Eye, written as Barbara Vine), but none of the Inspector Wexford Mysteries. I'll definitely give it a go! :-)
I was expecting to be deluged by bookrings at the end of last week so picked this up as something short to tide me over before they arrived. Now I've finished the book, but the bookrings are yet to eventuate! This Inspector Wexford mystery was adequate, but fell short of the caliber of, say, Agatha Christie. I'm unlikely to search out further Wexford Mysteries based on this one, but would probably read others if they were particularly recommended.
I enjoyed this but wasn't too sure about how true to life Wexford's police department was - sending him to America to ask a few more questions? Like all good detective stories, the revelation surprised me at the end - and then I looked back and thought, oh yes, I suppose that was possible. It seemed to have been written with a strong eye to TV adaptation!

This book is no longer on the table at the OBCZ, so I am assuming someone took it but has not journalled it. Hopefully, it shall be journalled somewhere down the track...
