Somewhat confusing story about a half - native American war veteran's struggle with what you could call Post Traumatic Stress disorder.
I had a hard time keeping track of the characters and time line. I found the whole thing quite fatalistic. Not my cup'o tea.

BC meet-up

Journal Entry 3 by wingrainbow3wing from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, February 21, 2008
First MeGeets a heart felt apology for not having registered this book when I picked it up at the Edinburgh bookcrossers meeting in May 2007. It was a big surprise just now when I tried to find it on my shelf but couldn’t. Also a sobering wee lesson as I had been feeling frustrated that some of my books taken at the last meet-up, only a week ago, hadn’t been registered by the other bookcrossers who hoofed off with them. So sorry about that and at last a wee hello as I have picked this up to read. I remember I picked it up in the first instance thinking that the Native American view on post traumatic stress disorder would be unusual, also if it was recognised as the greatest novel in Native American Literature its voice ought to be telling an important tale, and finally I’m a Larry McMurtry fan and I figured if he thought it worth paying attention to it, I would!

Book cover: “Ceremony is the greatest novel in Native American Literature. It is one of the greatest novels of any time and place. I have read this book so many times that I probably have it memorized. I teach it and I learn from it and I am continually in awe of its power, beauty, rage, vision, and violence.” Sherman Alexie.

Her early masterpiece, the haunting, heartbreaking Ceremony, rises to greatness and can easily stand as one of the two or three best first novels of her generation, a book that has been startling and moving readers in their thousands for more than a quarter of a century. From the introduction of Larry McMurtry.

Set in the insular world of the Laguna Pueblo reservation but resonating far beyond, Leslie Marmon Silko’s novel tell the story of Tayo, an army veteran of mixed ancestry who returns to the reservation, scarred by his experience as a prisoner of the Japanese. Only by immersing himself in the Indian past and its traditions can he begin to regain the peace that was taken from him. Masterfully written, filled with the somber majesty of Pueblo myth, Ceremony is a work of enduring power. This thirteenth anniversary edition contains a new preface by the author and an introduction by Larry McMurtry.

Journal Entry 4 by wingrainbow3wing from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Thursday, February 19, 2009
I started reading this with determination in February 2008 and made the notes below once I had made headway with the text, now its February 2009 its time this book moved onto someone else’s book shelf… I’m not done properly, I’ve finally just scanned this to the end, as it’s been tough going for me. It’s dense with the deceptive quiet of hidden tension and the subject matter heart rendingly painful, not a chirpy book, though it does fade by attrition into a reflective calmness and the writing as I decided last year is luminous and rather wonderful.

As a fan of Larry McMurtry, I was attracted to this book by his praise, of it, though the feeling of impending car crash had me put the book down more than once before picking it up again when I felt stronger. It was the writing that kept me coming back for more, that luminous, dry, clear air feel of a place where you can see acres of sky and there’s a kind of busy silence and you are caught watching a raindrop fall for ever. That’s the sort of feeling here…

I've been avidly following BookCrossing.com alerts for the past many weeks since hearing about it from a co-worker. I came across this - my very first find! - during brunch at Renroc today. Needless to say, I can't wait to read it and release it back into the wild. I don't want to give too much away before I do, but let's just say I'm already planning to return it to its rightful home...
