7 out of 10

This edition, published in 1990, appeared under the name Samir al-Khalil. Since then the real author, an Iraki dissident named Kanan Makia, has come forward. The book is a scholarly and well-documented study of the Iraki Baathist regime of Saddam Hussein, a study that pre-dates the Kuweit crisis and Gulf War of 1990-91. It professes to be an examination of the meaning of the Baathist regime. It certainly succeeds.

Edited on October 29, 2010: The book is certainly dated, given the events of the last twenty years, but will still be of interest to students and historians of the Saddam period.
