Description : Eat, Pray Love is a journey around the world, a quest for spiritual enlightenment and a story for anyone who has battled with divorce, depression and heartbreak.

It's 3 a.m. and Elizabeth Gilbert is sobbing on the bathroom floor. She's in her thirties, she has a husband, a house, they're trying for a baby - and she doesn't want any of it. A bitter divorce and a turbulent love affair later, she emerges battered and bewildered and realises it is time to pursue her own journey in search of three things she has been missing: pleasure, devotion and balance. So she travels to Rome, where she learns Italian from handsome, brown-eyed identical twins and gains twenty-five pounds, an ashram in India, where she finds that enlightenment entails getting up in the middle of the night to scrub the temple floor, and Bali where a toothless medicine man of indeterminate age offers her a new path to peace: simply sit still and smile. And slowly happiness begins to creep up on her.

I can't work out which category to register this in - travel, biographies & memoir, women's fiction, fiction and literature ...

A fantastic memoir (;P) from Elizabeth Gilbert that takes you to the romantic shores of Italy, the temperate climate of India and finally, landing on the salty shores of Bali.

Wonderfully written and structured, this is one book people should read - especially if they feel the need of vicarious spiritual enlightenment.

Many thanks to LadyIndigo who shared this with me. I shall be posting it back either tomorrow when I pop out or on Monday. xxx

An enjoyable read, I particularly enjoyed the Italy section and must admit the India and Indonesia got a bit longwinded for my liking.

Thanks for sharing LadyIndigo

I'd seen this book around for ages, being talked-up, and thought "I must read it one day". Thanks to LadyIndigo for this bookring!
I struggled a bit at first with Elizabeth, she was just so depressing which I admit I probably would have been too in her situation. I really enjoyed her time in Italy (as I am eagerly awaiting my own Italian holiday next year!) and Indonesia. The Indian section I got a bit bored with, bit too longwinded as L1nda also said, and I had to skim over parts of it. Overall, it was an enjoyable book and I'm glad how things turned out for her in the end. 8 out of 10 from me.

ADDIT 2/6/08: Posted to mcbeff today!

I feel so bad that I've had this for two weeks! Unfortunately I am in the middle of exams for uni. My last exam is tonight though, so I plan on finishing this tomorrow. *Nods*

EDIT: Just finished the book and thought it was great. India and Bali were a little drawn out but still made for a great read. Now I'm just wishing that I knew more about what happened after the book finished..as always with good books, left wanting more.

Contacting charliewendy for postal details.

Wow! I enjoyed this so much I couldn't put it down. I am highly susceptible to travel memoirs and this book has given me a serious attack of wanderlust. I'm also a sucker for a spiritual journey so this ticked every box for me.
She had to tell us a certain amount about her messy divorce etc to set the scene and I felt she got the balance just right - she showed us how she got to the place she was at without going on and on about it. I quite often felt myself agreeing with her comments and saying "Yes! That's what I've felt too" especially in regard to her tentative reaching out to God.
One of the most enjoyable books I've read for some time!

Thanks for sharing LadyIndigo!!

Will pm freepages now.

Wow, what a wonderful read!
I'd been trying to get to this one and then Nikkilovesbooks said she was next in line for it and I have another bookring to send to her so this one got bumped up the list. Such an enjoyable read I loved the way that she structured the book eating in Italy, praying in India and finding balance and love in Bali. I didnt find that it dragged at all in either India or Bali, just was swept along with the story. Although without the Texan in the Ashram things would have not been as entertaining. I'm pleased that she found the Brazilian, I was just thinking before I turned that page, gee, she has been celibate for quite a while at this stage.
It really was one of those books that I loved so much I kept thinking about it at work and couldnt wait to get home to open it up again. In some ways I'm sorry that it had to end :-)
One quick recommendation - unless you are into mid-night snacks, try not to read the Italian section into the night, my stomach was growling all night and I couldnt stop dreaming about food, had to treat myself to a 3 course hot breakfast in the morning!

It is going onto Nikkiloves books today with the other bookring and a couple of surprises for her. Thanks LadyIndigo for sharing another lovely read :-)

Note to self - must try meditating and yoga one day :-)

This book was recommended to my by a few friends & when I saw it on LadyIndigo's page as a bookring, I just knew I was meant to read it - too many signs from too many places to ignore. Thanks for sending it onto me Freepages. I finish Uni (exam) on Friday & I think this will be the first book I dive into. I'll save it till then, otherwise I may forget to keep studying :) Thanks all for sharing. Nikki. XXXX
