Barry ( The Taming of the Screw ) is in top form in his latest collection of essays from the Miami Herald. He introduces readers to his teenage son, who rarely leaves his room except to demand new sneakers; to his two dogs, Earnest and Zippy, so fearsome to intruders that Barry had to install an alarm system; to certain Florida UFOlogists, who sound like prospective candidates for psychiatric study. There are several pieces about Barry's contest to pick the worst modern pop song, which drew 10,000 responses, with "MacArthur Park" the clear winner. Exceptionally good are the travel articles about China and Bimini. Other topics involve lefthandedness, the hazards of air travel (principally the other passengers) and masochistic consumers.

Sending this to VeganMedusa as part of a trade. Hope she will enjoy it.
Thanks brat! :)
I really enjoyed this, especially the latter half - Elvis, the worst song competition (when you list all the bad songs together it's quite awful how many there are!), China, etc. Good stuff. I hope to get a chance to read some of my favourites to hubby before bringing this to the next bookcrossing meetup. :)

I'd previously read one of the author's other books which I didn't really enjoy that much (Dave Barry's Only Travel Guide You'll Ever Need) however I've read some of his stuff in travel writing collections that I've liked so am looking forward to this one.

This one was a lot better than the previous Dave Barry book I have read. I enjoyed reading about the different things that make up his book, particularly the column about Elvis fans and also the ones about his son (ah teenagers).
Will search out some more Dave Barry books now. And taking this one along to the BookCrossing meetup today
