The basic business at the core of this book is a difficult topic-- violence to women. Adrienne Dines handles it well, though, with sensitivity to both the characters involved and to the reader. This is a novel about love, both the light and dark sides of it. It is set in a small village in Ireland and the story moves between 1980 and 1930. The characters are well drawn and unfold like early spring blossoms to reveal their fullness as the story goes on. Well done!

Synopsis
When Eleanor Morrissey leaves Kildoran on a dark September night in 1930, nobody is sorry to see her go and nobody expects to see her return. As far as the villagers are concerned, the Morrisseys have been shamed out of town forever. Fifty years later, some visitors attend the funeral of the convent's Mother Superior. When the funeral is over, one woman stays behind. Until she is free to leave again, she must struggle to understand her legacy - a legacy of voices. Threatening, angry, accusing voices that only she can hear, because they are soft voices - whispering.

Got this today at our bookcrossing meeting. I can't wait to read it.

Journal Entry 6 by brownwhitetan from Charleston, South Carolina USA on Sunday, June 3, 2007
I'm usually not a big fan of books that skip around in chronology and that have a lot of characters, but this one somehow kept my interest going. It was an intriguing story and I liked the fact that I couldn't predict anything. You really felt for the characters, even though they weren't perfect and were just human. I look forward to passing this book on.

*** Plot spoiler comments ***
I liked the fact that the brother and sister end up reuniting in the end. I didn't expect that with everything that had happened to separate them. I also like the fact that John dies with timing that means that Emer never has to see him again after she's stood up to him. She never had to deal with going back to him and that was more just than any plot twist I could come up with in my own head.

Received in a thank you basket at a BC meeting in Summerville on 11/10/07. Thank you so much for the goodies; what a nice surprise! I'd like to read this, then release, maybe at my OBCZ, maybe not.

This was a very good story that I enjoyed reading this weekend. I would read more by this talented writer. Thanks to her for donating the book, and to Molyneux for bringing it to the Charleston area a year ago. Perhaps one of the visiting Kiwis would be interested in it next week!

I know you said this is for Otakuu, but I've kind of intercepted it ;-)

Adrienne Dines spoke in London, and after her talk, Lytteltonwitch and I both wanted to read her books, so we decided we'd each buy a different one, and swap them. But by the time we got to Adrienne's booth, she'd sold out :-(

Otakuu's bag is too heavy anyway, so I'm really doing her a favour by stealing her book...

Ok, ok, I promise I'll give it back to her... eventually ;-)

A great story. From Adrienne's talk I expected it to be funny, but I'm actually glad it wasn't, because such a serious topic deserves to be handled sensitively, which it was. I did get a bit confused a couple of times about what was happening when, but that's probably because I was reading it in airports amongst many distractions.

I'll pass it on to either Otakuu or Lytteltonwitch (depending on which I see first) when I get home.

This a bit embarrassing as it has been on my reading pile for so long. Books tend to get swallowed by the black hole that is my TBR mountain. I enjoyed this book and once I started reading I couldn't put it down. It was a surprise to me that I enjoyed this book as I have a little bit of an aversion to 'Irish' authors or books set in Ireland. I will be seeing otakuu in a couple of weeks and will pass the book onto her.

Found in a box of dvd's given to me by Lytteltonwitch prior to her departure to the UK. I have just recently read another book from this author so it will be interesting to see how this one measures up to the first.

Doesn't look as if Discoverylover did read it before handing on. Pity I'd like to have read her comments. It fell into my hands thanks to a push from Discoverylover at a meet-up at The Loft this evening. I'll try to fit it in with a couple of bookrings and one book for each of my two real-life book clubs. Otherwise it will go down well at the UnConvention in November.
