WHEN EVIL WAKES ---

Sealed away through unending centuries in a sarcophagus never meant to be opened, he had patiently waited for the opportunity to live again, for the chance to feed on the unwary and grow strong. Now, at last, the waiting had come to an end. Brought to the Egyptology Department of Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum, the seals and spells that imprisoned him chipped away by his discoverers, he reached forth to claim the minds and souls of the unsuspecting city dwellers, to begin building an empire for himself and his god. And only three people had even a hint that anything was wrong.

For Henry Fitroy, 450-year-old vampire, it began with a haunting, inescapable image of the sun, a terrifying symbol of death to one such as he. Fearing for his sanity, he called upon his sometime-lover and comrade in supernatural investigations, ex-cop Vicki Nelson, for help. And even as the two struggled to cope with Henry's obsession, Vicki's closest friend and former partner, Police Detective Mike Celluci was following up on two mysterious deaths at the museum, certain he was looking at murders not accidents --- and equally convinced that the killer was a mummy brought back from the dead!

Huff's "Blood" series about Henry Fitzroy (vampire, illegitimate son of Henry VIII, and romance-novel writer [!]) is very entertaining; this is the third book, after "Blood Price" and "Blood Trail", both of which I liked very much. Each book pits Henry and ex-homicide cop Vicki Nelson against a different foe, usually supernatural. In "Blood Price" a computer nerd summons a demon and sets off all sorts of trouble [and, coincidentally, triggers the events that bring Vicki and Henry together]. "Blood Trail" features a band of werewolves - but they're the good guys, and they ask Henry and Vicki to help find out who's killing them. [This one's very humorous, especially when the wolves-in-human-form act out typical wolvish pack-dominance behaviors.]

"Blood Lines" has a more apocryphal theme: an ancient mummy wakes and attempts to take over the city (with designs on the world), and his power's so great that he can control practically anyone - including many of the police-force and political allies that Henry and Vicki depend on. Lots of intrigue, detective work, and growing dread in this one - and it also gives more space to Detective Celluci, a former lover of Vicki's (the two of them fight too much to be together but can't seem to stay apart - and Celluci cordially hates Henry), and to ex-street-punk Tony, who is one of Vicki's informants and is also a sometime lover/assistant/snack to Henry. [Tony's actually my favorite character in the series, although he seldom gets more than a line or two; I was pleased to find him very much in evidence in this book. (Update: I just found out that Huff's starting a new series with Tony as a major character; the first book, "Smoke & Shadows," is due in April of 2004.)]

The villain here is quite nasty, and the whole book is darker than the first two were; there's the exceedingly creepy slaying-by-magic of a baby, the framing and imprisonment of Vicki by some very unpleasant cops-gone-bad, and an assortment of other mayhem - not a lot of graphic violence, but some scary stuff. There's humor here too, and the way the characters interact is a lot of fun (even when they're fighting, which - when Vicki's involved - is most of the time), but if you're interested in the "Blood" series at all I'd recommend starting with "Blood Price" and working up to this one.
