Pre-numbered label used for registration. Haven't read. I keep INTENDING to read this book. I've had it about 5 years now. I do not think I am going to read the book, so it's only fair that I release it to someone who wants it. This book is for trade. Stop me before I sell it on eBay.

Journal Entry 3 by karendawn from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Sunday, November 28, 2004
An extremely impressive survey of science fiction for the fifty-year period that it covers (1926-1976). I learned quite a bit and have a few new titles to add to my list of books to read. Del Rey starts off the book with an overview and then covers each 12-year period in greater depth. A lot of it consists of listing various stories/books that were published, but in doing so he is able to trace the themes and I was able to see what might be interesting to go back and read. He also discusses a lot about fandom, which is just as important to science fiction as what is being published. He ends the book with a section on "Parallels and Perspectives." Here he discusses fantasy a bit as well as the major themes used in sf. There's also a nice glossary of terms. And he wraps up with a discussion of Star Wars and how it might influence the future of sf. The appendix includes a recommended reading list. Del Rey was the perfect person to write this book because he experienced the development of sf almost from the beginning of the period that he covers. Because he discusses sf from the perspective of someone on the inside, it is much more valuable. I do wish that he had written a follow-up to this book because I would love to see his thoughts about what has happened since. (It looks like he died in 1993, so he could have continued with a history of a number of years.)

Bought this at the Friends of Library Sale at Round Rock Library. I'm not a big science fiction fan, so I'm going to list it on Paperbackswap.com and Bookmooch.com so hopefully someone out there will request it......
