Dr Anya Crichton, a pathologist and forensic physician, finds work is sparse for the only female freelancer in the field. Between paying child support, a mortgage and struggling to get her business off the ground, Anya can't yet afford to fight her ex-husband for custody of their three-year-old son, Ben.

After her expert evidence helps win a high-profile court case, Anya is asked by lawyer Dan Brody to look into the drug overdose of a young Lebanese girl. While investigating, Anya notices startling coincidences in a number of unrelated suicides she's been asked to examine by friend and colleague, Detective Sergeant Kate Farrer. All the victims disappeared for a period of time, before committing suicide in bizarre circumstances. As Anya delves deeper, the pathological findings point to the frightening possibility that the deaths are not only linked, but part of a sinister plot. One in which Anya is unwillingly immersed...

9 out of 10

It is good to be reading about places you know for a change. I enjoyed the book very much & found it very easy reading. The short chapters seemed to aid the action, events moved along quickly & smoothly, & there were no unnecessarily long descriptive passages used as filler. The forensic medicine was extremely interesting, it usually is. I'm hoping the next one leaves Anya with a much less bleak outlook. I'd like to give it an 8.5 but as I can't I'll give it the 9 because I thought this was an extremely good first book.

Thanks LadyIndigo. I look forward to reading "Without Consent" & "Skin and Bone". I'll get this off to Pixette ASAP.

Just finished this.

The central character and structure are very similar to a Kathy Reichs novel, which I enjoy very much.

Having Sydney landmarks is a bonus.

I did enjoy the story but did find the pace was not as good as a Reichs novel though - it was too easy to put down and not feel complelled to find out what was going to happen next.

There is always the warm comforting factor with a sleuth-type character that you know they will win in the end. I always like this feeling.

Thanks so much for sharing. I will turn to the next one now.

I'll send this one on tomorrow

9 out of 10

I just loved this book. I found myself doing things like putting the potatoes on to cook and reading another chapter before I put the peas on! It took a few chapters to get into it but soon I was totally hooked. The plot twisted and turned and I didn't guess the 'villian' until almost the end. I especially liked the ending when Kathryn did not resort to the temptation of tieing off all the loose ends but left so much hanging just like real life. A thoroughly satisfying read! Thank you LadyIndigo

8 out of 10

Have now posted this book on to the NT

I really enjoyed the style of writing by this author and loved her descriptions of places I knew in Canberra and Sydney. I also liked the fact that it ended without all issues being resolved in a neat little package... made it seem more like real life.

I really enjoyed reading this book.
Although I found it a little slow to start with, once I got onto it I found it hard to put down.
The forensic medicine was interesting, and the twisting plot kept me wanting more.
Am looking forward to reading more of Katherine Fox.
Thanks for sharing this book ladyindigo.

malicious intent has arrived home after its travels around australia

thankyou everyone for reading and sharing your thoughts

it is great that a new australian woman writer can write with such convinction, using her experience to base her fiction on rather than pretending and making up bits as they went along

I found this snowdropped on my doorstep with some other wonderful books on Wednesday. Such a wonderful surprise! countdebeans has already snavelled it from the table before me. We are both 'Bones' (based on Kathy Reichs) and Peter Corris fans so I am really looking forward to this. Thanks again LadyIndigo.

7 out of 10

I 'borrowed' this one from Elddau1 before she had the chance to get to it (part of a ring) and I really quite enjoyed it. I felt it was very well written (compared to a recent Reichs offering) and the medical material was smoothly incorporated. Being a bit of a tragic for the TV version of this genre though, I thought it was a little transparent - in that some things were clear to the reader somewhat in advance of the heroine.

7 out of 10

I generally really enjoyed reading this book. It was well written and moved along well. I would rate it a 7 1/2 if the scale would let me, but not quite an 8 compared to my other 8s. In the last 50 pages I wanted more to happen than what did and I had a few problems with the author's logic at times. All in all though it was very good. I'm glad I read Kathryn Fox's debut novel. A good promise of things to come.

It’s such a pleasure to read home-based novels for a change. I like Peter Corris’ Cliff Hardy series for the same reason, but I warmed to Anya Crichton more and liked the added interest of the forensic detail.
