Neverwhere

Richard Mayhew is a plain man with a good heart – and an ordinary life that is changed forever on a day he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on a London sidewalk. From that moment forward he is propelled into a world he never dreamed existed – a dark subculture flourishing in abandoned subway stations and sewer tunnels below the city – a world far stranger and more dangerous than the only one he has ever known …

Caught at the BCSSSB - thanks for coming all the way down!
Burned through this feverishly - what a fantastic read :) I loved the characters and am only sorry that there's not more set in this world... I especially liked the twist on places like Knightsbridge and Shepherd's Bush.
I'm hoping to release it at the London Convention - thanks for sharing!

Passed on to me by microsquid - thanks heaps. And thanks for keeping me company at the London World convention of book crossing 2008. You made it great!!!!!!!!!!!
I shall read this while on holiday and then send it to veganmedusa as part of a trade!
A great read by Neil Gaiman, set in London below where things happen just that little bit differently than the London we all know. "mind the gap" means beware of the blackness that slithers out from between the tube and the platform that can grab you and pull you to your death. The characters were fascinating and the world created full of fun and fear.
Like Microsquid I really enjoyed the play on the names of the underground stations, Blackfriars, Earls Court and Barons Court.
A 10/10 book only gets a nine because it is Americanised. Despite the main character being from Scotland and the setting being London one of the characters looks out a window and sees a drugstore. A Drugstore!!!! No way, they would see a pharmacy or a chemist (odds are it would be Boots. And the map of the underground at the front has the date format as mm/dd/yy which I think it a terrible oversight. If the publisher was concerned american's would be confused with a dd/mm/yy format then the dates should have been written in full.

An interesting adventure into the underworld, which we all half believe in.

Thanks, KiwiinEngland. This sounds great. And super-thanks for the extra treat - orange chocolate is my favourite. And yes, moving house is extremely stressful (I think more so with children)!
It sounds like this would be a good book to read in London (and have one eye on that gap) but I will just have to pretend. :)

I knew from page 8 that I was going to love this book, once London became a major character. I loved following their adventures on the tube map, and I'm definitely going to read more about all those abandoned underground stations. Excellent fun. I kept thinking who I'd cast in the movie (Martin Freeman as Richard, Tilda Swinton as the angel, other parts negotiable) and now I've just googled and found that this book was based on a TV series?! Man, I'm behind. Must get hold of that series and see ...moreI knew from page 8 that I was going to love this book, once London became a major character. Okay, I've been told by a couple of people not to watch the TV series. I will obey, and let my imagination savour the memory of London Below.
This is on its way now to Blenheim.

Many thanks VeganMedusa. I had actually forgotten about the book. I'm passing it on to my daughter who wants to read it. I'll get her to journal it (or tell me) and release it again.
