Journal Entry 1 by starrdust from Cookstown, Ontario Canada on Thursday, April 5, 2007
This book was first published in 1967 and it is a hardcover with the most recent copyright date being 1970. It is Author Joanna Ostrow's first novel. This particular book was passed on to me in a small box of books about Scotland from my Uncle, who has since passed away.

From the front inside cover flap: "The time is now. But the powerful essence of the Scottish past -- which we sense at closer range in the novel's haunting prelude -- envelops the croft, Croichan, where the old couple live, Callum and Mary Macdonald. The past lingers over Moy, where the Coursing Meet sends the deer hounds and salukis streaking across the moor and assembles the toffs in their kilts and black velvet at the Laird's ball. It echoes in the silence that overtakes the men of Strath-Ard as the Gaelic tongue, which has defined and contained their world since time immemorial, fades from usage and memory. It engulfs the reader of Joanna Ostrow's strong and beautiful novel even as it engulfs, bewitches, and threatens the three complicated, modern young people who are drawn to Croichan in its Celtic twilight, breaking their heads, so to speak, against the croft's inevitable decline."
