Journal Entry 4 by lovepurple1 from London , Greater London United Kingdom on Friday, June 08, 2007
Amazing luck, finding this book. Was in Rotterdam for a few days last week, finished the book I took with me and tried everywhere to get something (anything..) to read which was in English. To no avail. Then, I saw this book almost hidden away on with general leaflets etc in the restaurant of the Hotel we stayed in - couldn't believe my luck. Know about bookcrossing anyway, as my best friend is a v. enthusiastic member. Read this in just over a day - really enjoyed it. Bit dark, uncomfortable at times, but pretty much enthralling. The ending, I thought, was ambiguous. Recommend it though, not just for those desperate to read something in English, either ;)I shall release this book tomorrow.

Journal Entry 6 by Giz-angel from Greenwich, Greater London United Kingdom on Monday, June 25, 2007
I really enjoyed this - I thought it was thought provoking and well written, and Dog in the Night-time was such a hard act to follow I wasn't sure this would do it for me at all. So I was dead pleased when it did! I took it to Estonia with me, but I really didn't want to leave it somewhere and it get tidied away - our hotel was a bit bare for wild releases. So I have decided to use it in a live swap at the BC Unconvention in Brighton next weekend. I reckon it will be a popular choice :-) So whoever gets this, I hope you like it!

Journal Entry 7 by Katisha50 from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, July 23, 2007
It was a popular choice! And I won it (thanks to a little bit of tactics between me and beckydore)! I am sorry that I have done my usual trick of not making a JE on books I am given/sent. I thought I was improving on this, but obviously not. I read the book quite quickly, but I am not sure what I thought about it. The writing was brilliant and that is what kept me hooked. Some of the characters were great, and I wanted to find out more about their story, rather than the one Mark Haddon was telling. The storyline reminded me of a relatively recent BBC sitcom which could have been cringe-making, given the topic, but which I thought was great because of the fantastic actors (anything Alison Steadman does is OK by me). So, in both cases, I persevered because of something other than the story. I think it was because I didn't find the mental illness angle entirely believable, and the abrupt ending was a real disappointment (as one amazon reviewer said, it is "offensive" to people with mental health problems). I hope this doesn't put you off reading it, as it is a well-crafted book which I am glad I read. It was passed to beckydore on Saturday.

I enjoy the style of writing ... the mention of well known sights / consumer goods helps make a more vivid picture. This is now being offered out on a ray. Participants are as follows: Juliako - read Caroline080 - read Gingergeoff - skipped - already has a copy Pakasanelly - read Katybean - read Alexandray - no reply Moontree - skipped - already has a copy Bookgroupman - skipped - already has a copy Pennywhistler - read Lelley - skipped Storychaser - skipped Baileybird - here Nawoo82 Australia - if ok. If you are due to meet / post something to someone later in the ring, feel free to bump them up the list to save postage etc.

I was supposed to be at the end of the ring but as I was at the meeting today and it was there to pass on I volunteered to take it with a view to reading it and then passing it on. If I see Caroline before I have a chance to read it may make sense to give it to her first and stick with the original order. Hope whatever happens is ok with people!

Journal Entry 12 by juliako from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Saturday, August 25, 2007
I enjoyed this although if you had described it to me I would have probably said it wasn't my type of book. I had asked to join the ring as I really liked Mark Haddon's previous book and so wanted to try this as well. Am glad I did - thanks! This is off to Caroline080 at Hudsons today!

Journal Entry 17 by BookAmbler from Colchester, Essex United Kingdom on Thursday, October 25, 2007
Received in the post today - thank you Caroline080! And to Beckydore for sharing :o) I'm making a point of not looking at the other reviews, as I thought The Curious Incident... was wonderful and don't want anyone to tell me how this compares! I've got a book club choice to read first then will get onto this asap!

Journal Entry 18 by BookAmbler from Colchester, Essex United Kingdom on Monday, November 12, 2007
Oh dear! My overall impression is of a depressing and cringe-making story, with occasional dollops of too much information! On the plus side; I liked the changing point of view; there was the Odd Spot of Humour which made me chuckle; and I did find it easy to keep turning the pages (in the hope it might lighten up :-) Maybe it's me that needs to lighten up though - my partner tells me I take things too seriously... I didn't notice the abrupt ending that others have mentioned; must flick through the end again! Have PMd Katybean for her address.

Journal Entry 20 by katybean from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire United Kingdom on Sunday, December 02, 2007
Finished reading this last night! I thought it was a good book, but nothing like Curious incident, which I guess I didn't expect it to be really, and I suppose Mark Haddon wants to write about different things LOL! I thought it had lots of honesty and humour in it, and I liked the way the story was told through the eyes of everyone in George's family, but it was quite dark in places, and a bit odd (scissors incident!). I also thought the ending was a bit abrupt, but I'm still going to be on the lookout for any new books by Mark Haddon. Thanks for starting the ring beckydore! I did pm Alexandray on Thursday for their address. Katybean

Journal Entry 28 by nawoo82 from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Friday, February 20, 2009
I just realised that I never journalled this book after finishing reading it. It read it back in November and remember liking it as a whole, but to no extremes. It wasn't as good as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime. The writing was really good, but there were some moments in the story where I didn't quite get into it for some reason, where I failed to empaphise with the main character. I have put this book in my AVL shelf. beckydore, if you wish me to send the book back to you, please let me know.
