Blurb:
"A telephone call shatters the calm of a Dublin summer morning; terrible news from war-torn Nicaragua; Johnny Little has been caught up in a mysterious skirmish and killed. Grief-stricken, his estranged parents Frank and Eleanor sets out on the ardous journey to bring back their wayward son home. It's a quest that will have profound consequences; in this hauntingly beautiful land of poetry, guns and frantic salsa music, nothing is quite what it seems..."

Really really good story about an Irish family in Nicaragua mid-revolution. Good to read if you're interested in Nicaragua.

Finished reading the book today and enjoyed it a lot! A thrilling, interesting story. Hilarious in places, but also touching and moving in others. Educational if you are interested in the history of Nicaragua. Great read!

There's a lot of Spanish dialogue in it, not always translated. I was glad to discover, that the knowledge of (Latin American) Spanish, a language I tried to learn about 10 years ago, had not altogether vanished, in spite of the fact that I never use it any more.

Thanks again for the trade. I will see to it that this book keeps on traveling. That may take a while. I'll have to find the right BX-er to send it to. One who I think will appreciate it (it's not on any wishlist!). You see, I hardly ever release books in English in the wild, here in the French speaking part of Belgium.

November update:

When chich from Perpignan asked me about my top reads of the last couple of months, I mentioned this one. In fact it was my # 1! She would like to read it too, so it seems I've found my "right BX-er" to send it to!

chich, although it's not a "new" book by O'Connor (1993!), like you presumed, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

An excellent read:-] What can I say about this book? It's funny, tense, moving and poignant all at the same time, a fantastic modern-day adventure in Nicaragua. Having read O'Connor's Star of the Sea (a must-read!), I didn't expect such a tale at all (mind you, I don't know exactly what I expected!) but loved it all the same! O'Connor is such a fantastic story-teller, he manages to draw the reader into any story, in any setting. His books are compelling and powerful and he has definitely become one of my favorite authors:)

Thanks again bestfriends for this wonderful RABCK (the second I read this week, you're amazing!).

I'll try to find a new "victim" so the RABCK goes on but I already have an idea on my mind;)

The best book I have read in a long time. A very sensitive "road book" describing the complexity of relationships and the despair of a family, but also a very funny account of a mad journey across Nicaragua.

I'm not doing well, lately, with fiction. Gave this one 125 pages. Don't much like the people; couldn't care less what happened to Johnny; no learning enough about Nicaragua. Can't rate it too low, though. It is well written. I'm really glad I joined, though. It's neat to be sending a book to Yemen. Next to Nagwen.

I loved it! I loved it! I loved it!
For one whole week I worried about Johnny, I had a great time with the Desperados De Amor and I wondered if Eleanor and Frank still love each other.
The book kept me guessing even after I finished it. I wrapped it up and sent it to Stacey today, when I got home I almost cried. I really got attached to the characters. I loved them all Smokes, Cherry, Lorenzo, Guapo, Eleanor and Frank. I felt like I wrapped up my own family and sent them over to the US.
I wish I was at the end of the ray's list, so that I could keep the book.
I hope the rest will enjoy it as much as I did.

Received in the post last week. Sorry for the delay in journalling. Life has been hectic. Assisting my son (age 19) with the management of his grandmother's estate is very time consuming. Looking forward to reading this one. Will pm rebeccaljames for address today.

09/10/2008 This one is up for the read this week. I will be posting it out to rebeccajames along with The Devil in the White City which has been owed to her for a long time.

Well written, very interesting reading. Tearful at times. Though it was a hard decision for his parents to hear after all they had been through, I understand the decision that their son made.
