INTERNATIONAL BOOKRING
RUNNING FOR THE HILLS - A Memoir by Horatio Clare
COMPLETED

After finding this in the Farming & Agriculture section at Borders, (no, I don't know why they have a Farming & Agriculture section and not a Biography section either), I decided to release it into the world as a bookring. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

"One Summer's day in the late 1960s two young Londoners fell in love with a hill farm in South Wales. They had almost no money, no idea about sheep, and their marriage was uncertain from the start.

Their new home was a mile up the wild mountain, one end dug into its damp flank. It was ancient, cold and unbelievably primitive, with a view like a prospect of Africa. On a fair day it was paradise."

I am throwing in the towel. I have a good stack of bookring books and the new-found ability to fall asleep within several pages (makes it very hard to get through a book in a normal amount of time, plus you should see the huge stack of magazines...). So to start anew with the new year and not be such a bad bookcrosser, I am sending this on unread to the next person on the list. Sorry for the huge delay! I will try to get it out to the post office in the next several days. It's a bummer because it looks good but I'll put it on my wish list and read it later (maybe in 18 years when I catch up on sleep). :-)

This is headed to Sujie in Australia next.

Arrived today, thanks JerrilynL. Thanks for the three months grace, mp, as two rather large ring books have also arrived in the last week. Looks a good read. Nice moggy, Jerrilyn!

Really enjoyed this book as it paralleled my husband's and my exodus from Sydney to the countryside - we set up a pottery, not a sheep farm - and the author and his brother are the ages of my two children, so there were lots of things, books and events in common. However the treatment of sheep in Wales - as individuals, worthy of attendance at lambing - couldn't be more different than in Oz! I didn't envy Jenny her flock but I admired her courage and determination. I've never taken running water from a tap for granted either.
I particularly loved the description of the Welsh mountains; some very beautiful writing. Also Horatio's acceptance and respect for his parents' differences - I wonder if that is the result of hindsight and maturity.

Thanks for this, mp. I ordered an 'as new' copy from a bookshop in England and it came speedily (within a week) and even with postage costs was half the price of a new book here.

8 out of 10

I started reading this book over a fortnight ago and I have been uncharacteristically slow about it, and I don't know why. I found everything about it interesting, Robert and Jenny's beginnings at the farm, the growing problems, the developping of Horatio's tale and all the trials and tribulations. It may have been long chapters making my end of the day reading harder to concentrate on or just that I'm rubbish at concentrating on factual writing. I am nevertheless thrilled to have been offered a chance to read about their life in the Welsh hills - I must have heard Robert on the radio, as I am and always have been a fan of Radio 4 and have shouted the very same things as Jennie at Brian Redhead and John Timpson, a good Norfolk lad.

Also, thank you to the kind person who inserted the odd lines of poetry within the pages. Loved it.

Going off to madmadge in the morning, who has been waiting patiently all this time.

This book arrived two days ago but I've only just had a chance to journal it. I am already three quarters of the way through it and enjoying every page. Won't be long till it can continue its journey so watch this space. Thank you musicalpenguin for including me and Cross-Patch for sending it to me along with the lovely postcard.

What a wonderful read! I am so glad I had the opportunity to read this story. Jenny was/is an outstanding lady, if a little crazy, and I don't know how she put up with so many hardships but I think I can understand why she did. She was so in love with her home and the surroundings that she would put up with anything.

I felt sorry for her husband Robert but I can fully understand why he left.

I loved the descriptions of the wonderful countryside and of the daily life of the little family and their friends and neighbours and the way the story was told.

I will PM the next in line and will send it on its way next week (hopefully).

Hey there :)
I haven't read this book yet, and unfortunately I'll have to send it home without doing so. My TBR pile is huge, and I'm doing a sort of "clean up", sending along most of the books I have with me. I'm sorry for not reading it, but huge TBR piles ask for radical measures...

Thanks for sharing anyway. Please PM me with your address, musicalpenguin, so I can send this one home. Thanks.
