Thanks, smallbluepebble for this book. A friend told me about it I'm quite curious... When I finish it'll give it to someone who I think will enjoy it. Thanks for your generosity of sending it to me.

Born On A Blue Day
A Memoir of Asperger's and an Extraordinary Mind

Daniel sees numbers as shapes, colours and textures and can perform extraordinary maths in his head. He can also learn to speak a language fluently from scratch in a week. He has Savant Syndrome, an extremely rare form of Asperger's that gives him almost unimaginable mental powers, much like the Rain Man portrayed by Dustin Hoffman.

Daniel has a compulsive need for order and routine - he eats exactly 45 grams of porridge for breakfast and cannot leave the house without counting the number of items of clothing he's wearing. If he gets stressed or unhappy he closes his eyes and counts. But in some ways Daniel is not at all like the Rain Man. He is virtually unique amongst people who have severe autistic disorders in being capable of living a fully independent life. It is his incredible self-awareness and ability to communicate what it feels like to live in a unique way that makes his story so powerful.

Touching as well as fascinating, Born On A Blue Day, explores what it's like to be special and in so doing gives us an insight into what makes us all human - our minds.

What a great book!!!! Quite simple, easy and enjoyable reading :) It's amazing how Daniel has the capacity to see numbers as well as to do math operations, learn a new Language in a week and memorize the the pi numbers. I found interesting that he is unable to understand some sentences because he looks for the exact meaning... Overall, an interesting and fascinating book about Daniel's mind and life despite he's so young...
Thanks smallbluepebble for sharing!! I'll be looking for a new reader soon :)

28Jan2008: This book has found a new reader, afraberg!!! It's on it's way : ) Hope you like it

I recieved this book today, as a surprise together with a Dutch ring about Asperger. I have read an interview with Daniel, when he was in Holland for a lecture or the promotion of his book or something, I don't remember exactly, but I do remember him as an interesting person, so I sure will read the book. Thanks!

Took this book with me from the opening meeting of the new obcz in Amstelveen. It seems like a very interesting read!

I thought it a very good read. I've seen a documentary about a savant before. Kim Peek, who get's mentioned in this book aswell. I find it very impressive what he and Daniel can do, like learning so many languages and the number pi. But what I find most interesting is that Daniel can explain how he experiences numbers and other things. It's still hard to imagine for me, but I think he does a very good job at describing them.
