"Everything is changing in Rossmore. No longer a sleepy Irish town; nowadays it's a prosperous place, so busy that a new bypass has been proposed. The people of Rossmore are divided, particularly since the road will go right through the Whitethorn Woods and the well dedicated to St Ann - a well thought by some to have near spiritual properties, and by others dismissed as a superstition. No one is more concerned than the honest and well-meaning curate Father Brian Flynn, who has no idea which faction to support. Surely Neddy Nolan's family should take the compensation being offered for their land? But wasn't Neddy's mother given a cure at the well many years ago? And what about the childless London woman who came to the Whitethorn Woods, begging the saint for help, with the most unexpected consequences? Full of Maeve Binchy's warmth, humour and compassion, Whitethorn Woods tells of the people of Rossmore, each with their own story, as they wait for the great road of progress ..."
I am a great fan of Maeve Binchy and I really enjoyed this book although it seems to me that she's starting to 'write by numbers' - this book felt a bit 'lazy' to me - but enjoyable nonetheless!

Many thanks for this RABCK prize, it arrived safely to Tampere today. I look forward to reading this and will pass this on after I have finished it.
While picking up books to read from the oldest end of my TBR's registered by others whenever possible, I picked up this Binchy and was sweeped to the lives of several Irish families. The book started being a story of a priest but then evolved to include so many characters, that I sometimes felt so to say short of breath to follow them all. Some had clearer connections to the "centre story" and the others were perhaps left a bit more vague. Anyway, what Binchy does best is to write about feelings and relationships. Love, thankfulness, quilt, remorse, insecurity, hope, hate... You name it, she is well capable of describing them all.
Next I will offer this book to someone who has it on her wishlist.
