10 out of 10

Thanks again noumena12 for passing on this excellent book.

The first page reads: "When my mother died she left the farm to my brother, Cassis, the fortune in the wine cellar to my sister, Reine-Claude, and to me, the youngers, her album and a two-liter jar containing a single black Perigord truffle." You sense immediately the undercurrent in the family. The narrator returns to her childhood village, but something sinister happened, many years ago, during the German occupation at WWII, that forced her family to flee their home, and forced her to return under an alias.

Frambroise returns, and remodels the old house into a successful cafe, making dishes based on her mother's recipes. (The lucious description of the dishes is almost a food porn.) However, scribbled all over the album are lines of an enigmatic language, the key to unlocking what happened all those years ago.

Frambroise is not a likeable character. (Simply have to quote this from Amazon: "named for a raspberry but with the disposition of, well, a lemon.") Not likeable as a thin-lipped old widow, and definitely not as a spunky nine-year-old. For she was diabolic, calculating, and cold hearted. However, the complex story itself is excellently told, in a dark tone that captivates me well after the book is closed.

Thanks azuki for passing this book my way. Ever so sorry to not journal this as received and read. We've been on holiday since the first of July and it just skipped my mind.

Although Framboise seeks to achieve her ends by whatever means she deems necessary, you have to feel for her because of the way she was reared. This was a captivating story where the characters rather haunt you after you have finished it.

Will see if anyone else is interested in it.

Thanks agian!

Ok, so far this is the line-up for the book:

BethanieKay - US
Tregossip - UK
Maria-Nunes - Portugal

It was posted to BethanieKay on August 23.

I enjoyed this book - although it was quite complex and skipped around (chronologically) many times. The story was captivating and the characters (even if not always likable) were intriguing. At the end, I couldn't help feeling that there must be more, or that maybe I had missed something, as it seems that some of the questions in my mind hadn't been answered. Or, it may just be that the author wanted it that way :) Overall, an intriguing tale and as others have said, full of characters who seem to stay with you even after the book is done.

Have PM'd the next in line for addy and will post soon!

Great - it arrived today safely - one book to finish and looking forward to getting into this. Thanks one and all

What a great read, characters get under the skin and irritate - the skill of the author. A powerful novel.

9 out of 10

I'm so glad I decided to read this book immediately. I thought it was great. I confess that when I started I thought, "Oh no, France again, mysterious person with links to the past, Nigella Lawson-like drooling over food", but I was soon won over. A cracking good read which tugged at my heart strings in more than a few places. It went in the post to Madnad at lunchtime today. Thanks very much for letting me take part in this one.

This was my 2nd book by Joanne Harris - she definitely is a talented writer! I don't know whether it was because I felt weak/ill or whether I didn't find it gripping but at some points I had to put the book down, and it took me a few days to get back into it. I liked the story line but felt some parts were a bit unnecessary.
I thought Famboise's mother was a fascinating character, and I liked the others as well.
Good book! Thanks for sharing.

I sent it on to kittychia this afternoon:)

I feel as at the end I miss something or maybe she wouldn't close the story in here.
Not as good as others Harris'books I read before but a good reading...and as always, descriptions of foods and dishes are so vivid that I can imagine to create and eat them :)

I'll send it to Pell tomorrow at lunchtime. Thanks for sharing!

18.March.09 ---> sent it out today! :)
