Journal Entry 1 by KateKintail from Burke, Virginia USA on Saturday, March 24, 2007
I read this only last year. It soon became my favorite Robert Louis Stevenson book, however. It's a coming of age story about a young man named Davie Balfour. However, it's much more than that. After the death of his father, David seeks out his only living relative, and ends up being kidnapped! He takes on pirates, is shipwrecked, gets caught up in a murder, and befriends a traitor to the crown. It was easy to sympathize with and root for David. But I found myself especially loving the "spirited and daring" Alan Breck. It's a great novel for a young adult, because of the adventue. But it's also a great read for an adult, because there's plenty of culture and politics as well. In all, it's a fun and exciting story! First Sentence: I will begin the story of my adventures with a certain morning early in the month of June, the year of grace 1751, when I took the key for the last time out of the door of my father's house.

Finally finished this book today! Goodness it took me a loooong time to get over the language and accents and start reading smoothly. I liked the history side of things and thought it was a good adventure story. I originally wanted this book to add to my classroom bookshelf for my students, but this is way beyond their reading levels. So, I'm going to set it as available until I can release it another way!
