Since Shreve's last book (The Pilot's Wife) was an Oprah pick, she's sure to have a winner with this one. But even without Oprah's help, this book is not to be missed. Fortune's Rocks takes Shreve back to her forteAa literary novel set in a historical framework. It worked beautifully in The Weight of Water, and it does here as well. As the year 1899 moves toward 1900, Olympia Biddesford is a 15-year-old on the cusp of womanhood. Spending the summer with her family at Fortune's Rocks, a New Hampshire coastal community, she meets John Haskell, an esteemed friend of her father. Though John has a wife and four children, he and Olympia are instant soulmates. Their intense affair creates complete havoc in both of their lives. A few weeks of joy turn into years of pain and redemption, culminating in a tense, page-turning trial at the end of the book. Shreve's writing is just complex and meaty enough to portray the time period perfectly, and it's a beautifully told story. Order multiple copies, and put yourself on the holds list! This will fly off the shelves.

I enjoyed this book and was absorbed by both the characters and the historical details, particularly of the court case at the end of the book. That said, I wouldn't rush to read more by this author or to recommend this book. It seemed entertaining, but not particularly groundbreaking or compelling -- just an average coming of age story set in early 1900 with a love affair between a young girl and an much older man. Ho hum.

I'll be mailing this soon to someone from a wishlist relay.

Thanks a lot, msjoanna, the book is here! I've seldom received anything from US with such speed,it took only three days for the book to travel here. Anita Shreve is one of my favourite authors, let's see if I'm going to like this one...

This was a disappointment for me as I have liked so many books by Shreve! Especially the first part of the book was dull, I just couldn't get into the love affair between a teenager and an elderly man. The latter part of the book was more addictive, although the court session reminded me of the books by Jodi Picoult. Although this story wasn't my favourite, I still admire Shreve as a talented writer.

Thank you so much for this Anita Shreve book. I am so glad to have it and I look forward to reading it. I have had such a busy time the last couple of months, and I only just got home from yet another week's holiday in the UK yesterday. I am really sorry that it has taken me so long to get around to thank you for this great rabck. I had so much to do, so many things going on, and so much stress that I just could not cope with everything. I hope now that I can get back into bookcrossing and catch up again! I have still been reading, but slowly! This was very kind of you, as always! Thank you also for the lovely postcard. The picture on it is really cute!

When I started this book I found it a bit boring and I was not sure if I was going to carry on reading it, but because I have really liked the Anita Shreve books that I have read so far, I decided to continue reading. I was really glad that I did as I absolutely loved the story after a while and I was sorry when I had finished reading it as I enjoyed it so much. I will be releasing this book soon into a Little Free Library, when I can get to one.
