Everyone says you don't need to read have read Lolita to read this book, but if you haven't read that, and a bunch of other stuff referred to in this book, you might get a teeny bit frustrated.

I started my copy of this ages ago, and decided that since I'd never read any Nabokov, why not read Lolita before going any further in this book? So that's what I did. I even read Lolita, and got totally sidetracked and never picked this one up again.

But all along, I said that I'd do a bookring of the two books together. Well, even though I haven't finished my copy of this, I found this good-condition copy at Goodwill last night, and now I can put that ring together!

I finally did it!

I set up a bookring with this book and Lolita, after many and long ago discussions. This book will begin its travels with its partner next Friday or Saturday.

Interesting book, and it really helped having read Lolita first. Great idea to make them a double ring, thanks Antof9! The sections which referred to books I hadn't read were tougher going than, say, the sections on Lolita, or the chapter on Jane Austen. She does explain about the books she discusses, so it wouldn't be impossible to read this book without prior knowledge, but it definitely helps.
It took me a while to finish; it's just one of those books that doesn't go very fast, but I certainly enjoyed it. Sent both books on their way to brunton11 today.

Arrived today - Thanks for sharing :)

What an interesting read - I enjoyed learning more about what was happening in Iran during the 80s/90s and the impact the various regimes had on every day life. Having read The Great Gatsby recently was a bonus in Chapter 2!

Thanks for sharing and giving me the opportunity to read a couple of books I probably wouldn't have chosen to buy myself.

Hinerangi has asked to be skipped. I have address details for cat207 and will get both books in the post to her tomorrow.

Arrived with its travelling partner in today's mail. Thank you brunton11 - for the Christmas card, too - and Antof9 for sharing. X

This wasn't quite the lightness we were expecting, was it? I found it to be rather monotonous. The continual jumping between times and characters made it hard to follow, but I do agree that having read 'Lolita' first made the earlier chapters more interesting.

Thanks Antof9 - a great idea sending the two books out together.

Off to LadyKnightNiko (what a beautiful name!) in tomorrow's mail.

This was waiting for me in my mailbox today. I will go ahead and ask for the next reader's address, and pass on when I finish.

Thanks antof9 for sharing, and cat207 for sending this to me.

I definately liked this one better than Lolita, but I felt at times it dragged a bit. There were certain things that the author felt the need to tell her reader that I felt weren't all that important to the story she was trying to tell.

However, I'm very glad I read this one- thanks for sharing, Antof9! Unwritten Libra has asked to be skipped, so I will mail these to nerdybookgirl before German in the morning.
