A talking dog? Delightful!

A talking dog who spouts his philisophical opinions on life? Priceless!

Thank you so much, the book was great and came highly recommended.

The personification was only slightly overdone but overall it was nice to read "Boy's" life story. Sure feel sorry for his puppyhood...

A SURPRISE RABCK !!!!
Thank you so much. This book looks like so much fun. Finding a package in my mailbox took me completely by surprise.
I do adore dogs! Just addeded a precious Australian Terrier to my household last October. This book looks delightful. Thank you so much.

as an aside.... My 18 1/2-year old cat passed away just a couple of weeks ago - the last of the family cats to succumb to old age.
I have a small library of cat books (will peruse for a suitable RABCK !), and my bathroom is decorated a la cat. I will try to upload a photo of Lizzie and Rascal together.

If you can imagine a large, fuzzy-furred dog in smoking jacket, sitting with legs crossed in a cozy armchair, pipe in hand, glass of port close by, you have my picture of Boy-- “a dog of uncertain origins”— as he narrates his memoirs. (This is a dog who likens himself to Proust !) While his pedigree might be a bit dubious, his wit is of the finest quality: droll, dry, insouciant, satirical, and just plain laugh-out-loud hilarious. This is THE MOST entertaining book I have read in years. I absolutely loved it.

Boy begins life nameless and unwanted, but he is quick to take stock of his situation, understand that humans have the all the Aces, and develop the necessary skills to bluff his way into the game and move himself up in the world. Before long he has finagled his way into the hearts and hearth of Peter and Mrs. Mayles. Life is good and it just continues to get better (at least for the dog). From his favorite vantage point under the dining-room table, he observes the human world and shares his take on the goings on with the reader.

My husband is always saying that if he just knew how to “make puppy-dog eyes” he could get away with anything. Sadly, he can’t and he doesn’t! But, he is right. Everyone with a dog in their life knows in their hearts that the little buggers have our number and know how to get their way. Boy’s pragmatic viewpoint – that humans are a dog’s “most convenient support system” confirms what we all know. We don’t own them, they own us.

What a great read. Can hardly wait to get my hands on more books by Peter Mayle.

(can't bring myself to part with this book just yet... will mark it "reserved" and put it in my guest room to be enjoyed by my next dog-crazy house guest)

Turns out that my guest-room guest has already read this book. She has also recommended another of Peter Mayle's novels to me, which I have already managed to find and look forward to reading.
So... A Dog's Life is on it's way to katyan in Finland. This is a RABCK to fulfill a request on her WishList and, as it turns out, will also be a celebratory RABCK for successfully defending her PhD dissertation.
Happy reading and major congratulations.

I really enjoyed reading this funny dog book. The observations of Boy were usually great and really deep insights of us humans. And they were always so funny, sometimes even in a scary way: are we really like that in a dog's eyes?!

I'll pass this book to a next dog lover when I'll find one... actually I
we (Satya-the one in the picture- & me) have someone in our mind already...

Thanks, Katyan and Satya! I love dogs but don't have one any longer due to my allergies. I'm sure I'll enjoy this book and I'll find a way to pass it on when I'm done, either as an RABCK or a wild release.

12/27/2007, Edited to add: This book was picked up before I got home and got around to making release notes on it. I enjoyed it very much, and hope that future readers do also!
