Bought this book for BBC at the Newark airport on the way home from my first business trip of the year. Finished it at 9:59 this morning for book club, which meets at 10:30. Phew!

Will write more later -- this definitely created a lot of discussion at BBC!

So first, I HATE this cover! The whole time I was reading this book, I tried to hide it :) It seriously freaks me out and I'll be glad to get it out of my house soon!

Next, the BBC read this book because it's the sequel to this book, which we surprisingly all liked. Still confused about that -- I'm not sure we've ever had a book we all liked before ... For more information on that, here are all the blog entries on this book.

Because I mentioned the translator for the first book, I thought I'd mention here that we all agreed they got sloppy on this one. In fact, we assumed it must be a different translator because it seemed so different from the first one. Surprise, surprise! When I compared the two books side-by-side, it's the same guy. Interesting.

So ... I didn't like this one nearly as much as the last one, although I still had a vested interest because of the appeal of the first one. That said, I turned down a BUNCH of page corners in this one. Let's see if I want to mention any of them here.

Oh yes -- there was an interesting piece about a girl who liked her dad better than her mom that resonated with me: I'm my dad's daughter and I love him a lot more than my mom. It's only kids who can't tell you who they love more -- their mom or their dad -- grown-ups have no problem answering the question ...

I also think I'd like to hang out with an author who says something like this "There's nothing better than forcing someone into a dead end and making him formulate his question properly." LOL!

This is totally random, but I want to record it here -- the music video that's playing in the bar on page 233? I've SEEN it! And it's from a band named for a little town in Germany. The town that the Air Force base was near where I graduated from high school! The music video is just "meh", but it's still pretty cool to recognize the whole thing in a Russian book that my book club was reading :)

We talked about this at BBC too, and came to no conclusions, but this author seems to do a lot of referring to things that never go anywhere. For example, on page 413, the guard is "another Beskud". And we've seen them before in this book. But ... so? We never find out that that means anything. That irritates me :)

Ok -- enough already. I do have the next book, and we found out there was a 4th (which is really annoying when you think it's a trilogy ...), so I'll probably read it at some time, but since I didn't like this as much as the first, I'm not quite so eager to keep rushing through the series.

Off to the Czuk house!

5.20.08 Updated to add a picture to this journal entry. Some people have too much time on their hands, and too much enjoyment of Photoshop. I'm just saying.

Thanks for this, ant! Book Two in a four part trilogy. Didn't Douglas Adams do that, too? Maybe it's in homage to him. Your cover cover made us smile, but I have to agree with you. It's an icky cover!

We're both looking forward to reading these...

Thank you!

First, I love the cover. Strangely, the book arrived with a post-it note stuck on the front, I guess someone was going to write a note and forgot about it. Regardless, I removed the sticky note and saw this interesting picture of a face and the coolest shades of blue.

I found the book to be a fine sequel to the first one. Intriguing how the author voiced this one from a number of different points of view, especially from the Dark Ones' side. Unlike some other sequels that seem forced, this book seemed a natural extension of the first, while at the same time seen from a whole bunch of new perspectives. Easy to see how Lukyanenko became a best seller in his home country.

In regard to Ant's comment about Beskud-- there's now a discussion on Amazon forum about how the author defined Beskud as an "unclean spirit." Apparently the term is used in eastern european folklore, although it is an obscure word. Unclean, in Slavic folk usage, typically refers to anyone who met some sort of untimely end that does not allow them to pass on to heaven; it can also mean someone who has been transformed from an ordinary human form into a supernatural entity, but not one which has humans' best interests at heart. Since this term doesn't seem to appear in Russian folklore, but rather Ukrainian, Polish, and Slovakian folklore, one could speculate that the author is merely peppering the story with different and exotic characters for the sake of variety.

Oh, nice portrait, Ant, I didn't realize you had such penetrating eyes in certain lights.

5.24.08 Update: Can't understand why you do not like the cover of this book, Antof9. Oh, by the way, here's a recent untouched picture of my nephew.

I'm in the midst of huge chore of cataloging our books to clear some out. So far, I've done over 956 and that's only three book cases out of 21. I will wild release this soon.
