Born to rough cloth in working class London in 1748, Mary Saunders hungers for linen and lace. This leads her to a life of prostittion at an early age. A dangerous misstep sends her fleeing to Monmouth where she finds refuge in the middle=class househould of Mrs. Jones, her mother's childhood friend. There she becomes a seamstress, but her desire for a better life leads her back into prostitution. But ultimately this desire will finally lead Mary to disaster.

This one appeared in a couple of swaps before I managed to grab it so thanks LML so much for offering it :-) it's kind of not my usual genre but I thought it looked so interesting and I've heard good things about it.....

And thank you once more to the gorgeous Rosie xxx

8 out of 10

I read this cos I want to send it over the sea to zzz to replace a copy he didn't get. So it really helped me to decide what to read next - I was in a mini slump!

I totally enjoyed the first part of this book but when Mary left to go to Monmouth, for me I felt it lost some momentum. I loved that it was very loosely based on a real life, and I felt the harshness of Mary's life intensely. And it's made me put some more of Donoghue's books on my wishlist!

And zeddy didn't want it at the moment! So this copy is going to cats-eye instead xx
