Duplicate copy as I found this book strangely compelling.

"It is off-season in a remote Highland sea-port: 21-year-old Morvern Callar, a supermarket employee, wakes to find her strange boyfriend has committed suicide and is dead on the kitchen floor. Morvern's laconic reaction is both intriguing and immoral. What she does next is even more appalling..." - back cover

How it works
- PM me to join and state your shipping preferences.
- When I have at least 5 people, I'll (probably) post the book to the first person.
- Please journal the book when it arrives and when you've sent it on.
- When you've read it, please PM the next person on the list for their address.
- Bear in mind other people want to read it, so don't put it at the bottom of your TBR pile (6 weeks is a reasonable timeframe imo)!

When I have enough participants I'll sort the order to suit as many people's postage preferences as possible.

Excellent book, very different from my normal reads, but worth it.

It has given me the impotus to find the film on DVD, and when mt TBR's are a little lower I will seek out more Alan Warner.

I will PM Suedo and send on.

Journal Entry 7 by suedo from Spennymoor, County Durham United Kingdom on Monday, April 30, 2007

I@m finding the writing style hard going. I have put this off for a week, because every time I looked at it, I was in the mood for a lighter read.
The plot is intriguing, but I find the author meanders rther, adn I get impatient to know what is going on. I don't find myself sympathising with any of the characters, and I'm not sure how far I'll persevere.

I read it to the end, but still had no sympathy for the main character. I felt the story did not really go anywhere, and the end seemed a bit arbitrary.
I'll be interested to see what others think. I have bonnie0907's address, so will post it on this week.

I also found this book very heavy going. Not my kind of book, but I am glad to have had it. I am ready now to pass ot on to midlifecrisis.

I'm really sorry, I just couldn't get going on this book, did not enjoy the style, and just wanted to put it aside and read something else. I will get it in the post to the next person as soon as possible. It must be frustrating to get a thumbs down for a book you have enjoyed, but there you go...

That was fast, thanks Midlifecrisis! PMing the next person for address now and will read this book asap (I'm intrigued to see whether I'll love it or hate it after all these different opinions).

Wow. This is the bit I hate about bookcrossing - trying to make intelligent comments about a book, especially one like this that really knocked me for six.
After I figured out some of the slang (like greeting) it was easier. The writing style is kind of like The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, in that there's no emotion at all - at least not explicit, there's plenty implied. It also reminded me of The Catcher in the Rye, in that Morvern seemed to be disconnected from everyone and everything (also Camus' L'etranger as it says on the back of the book). But whereas I hated both L'etranger and The Catcher in the Rye (I found them both boring and pointless in their disconnection), I loved this book!
Totally compelling. I've tried to explain to my husband why I loved this book, but I can't explain why I liked Morvern so much when her actions didn't seem to be very likeable. All I can come up with is that if I lived her life (I mean, was there anyone left in her life who didn't betray her?), I'd be as disconnected as possible from the world too.
I had heard good things about the movie and wanted to see it, but I don't think I will now in case it just ruins the book for me.
Thank you bigcurlyloz for the chance to read this book - it will be one that stays with me for a long time.
