Synopsis
Alan Hollinghurst's first novel is a tour de force: a darkly erotic work that centres on the friendship of William Beckwith, a young gay aristocrat who leads a life of privilege and promiscuity, and the elderly Lord Nantwich, who is searching for someone to write his biography.

The book arrived here this morning, thank you. :o) I've wanted to read this book for absolutely ages so can't wait to start it. I do have a ring book that arrived last week so should really read that first, I won't be too long with this one though.

Thanks for the lovely postcard too.

Just adding a journal entry to apologise for being slow with this book. I've had a real rough time over the past few weeks and have hardly done any reading at all. It's coming up to half-term at college and I know I'll have a quieter time then and this book will be top of my list to read. I hope this is ok. If you'd rather I passed it on right away, just let me know and I will do.

I've finally read this book!! I started reading it a couple of times previously but just couldn't get into it. I think it's because I was feeling very stressed and really needed to read something light-hearted. Anyway, I decided to try again with this book and am so glad I did. I absolutely loved it, it was a brilliant read. I've read other books by this author but I think this one might now be my new fave of his. I love the way he writes, his books are so evocative and I just get lost in them. I think I'll be buying a copy of this for my PC as it's one that I know I'll want to re-read at some point.

I've PM'd iojima and received an address back so I'll get this in the post as soon as I can.

3 out of 10

I, too, have tried this book before. I read half of it this time before giving up. Other people's obsessions with sex just don't interest me that much, straight or gay.
Thank you, angellica, for the chance to try, again. Back to you when I receive your address.

This book just arrived. Thanks for sharing it, angellica, and for forwarding it to me, Iojima. It's next on Mt TBR ...

Updated: 22 July 2007

Thanks so much. I've finished this one very quickly. It was different from most of the books I've read recently. Loved how it was set in London with descriptions of Central Line and locations in Whitechapel and Stepney, where I lived for four years. He's got a fantastic way with words.

As soon as I get an address, I'll send it on.

7 out of 10

I found this a slow read but stuck at it ..as was sure something was going to happen. Yes the denoument was good but felt it took too long to get there, and not sure the narrator's decision was right one. Of all the characters liked him least. A good writer but found some of the sexual content got too much attention..so would like to see what else he writes about as loved his attention to detail eg architechture. It wasn't the book I thought it was i got him muddled with Woodward?. Ready to send to next reader. Sorry for delay have pulled a calf muscle and so couldn't get to internet..
