From the back cover :
"My Name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. My murderer was a man from our neighbourhood. My mother talked to him once about fertilizer."

Susie is the narrator of this book. From heaven, she watches her family being torn apart because of her death. Her body hasn't been found, nor the culprit arrested. Susie watches them struggle to cope with her death and try to go on with their lives. She watches her friends too, and in a way envies them for being alive.

This is a very moving book, sometimes a bit disturbing. The approach Alice Sebold takes on this difficult and uneasy issue is an unusual one : she tells the story from the dead victim's point of view, which adds to the strength of the plot.

I've decided to send this book on a bookring.

10 out of 10

There was a period in my life, long before joining bookcrossing, that i used to underline sentences in books, paragraphs, anything that i found interesting, well written, touching. I did so, so as at any time i could go back and re-read the "good" parts of the books and keep them alive in my memory. I quit doing so a bit after i became a bookcrosser for obvious reasons... i mean, not so many books stay with me anymore after i have read them... If i was to do this underlining work until today, the Lovely Bones that i have just finished would be like this: A single line, the longest one i'd ever cross in a book, starting from the first sentence opening the book and ending in it's last one closing it. Even though, i have to say, somewhere near the end i expected to read something else, something different, something more.
The writing is wonderful and so vivid if i could say, that it made me feel as if i was there in a corner of every scene described along with Susie, silently watching, ready to say to the characters "Wake up, Susie is here, can't you see that?".
I think that when reading a book and most of the reading has been done with tears filling up your eyes, this can imply a lot about how much you liked it, how much you've been touched by it. I wish our beloved lost that more or less everyone of us has in their lives, are Susies watching us and being here next to us. This is out of the book and i strongly hope for it to be true:

Almost everyone in heaven has someone on Earth they watch, a loved one, a friend, or even a stranger who was once kind, who offered warm food or a bright smile when one of us had needed it. And when i wasn't watching i could hear the others talking to those they loved on Earth: just as fruitlessly as me, i'm afraid. A one-sided cajoling and coaching of the young, a one-way loving and desiring of their mates, a single-sided card that could never be signed.

I won't say anything more because the bookring has just begun and i don't want to be a possible spoiler for the next readers to come. I hope everyone will enjoy reading it as much as i did.
Next stop: far away Norway!

(the photo uploaded is the cover of the book translated in greek. I think i might try and find it and see if it's as good written as the english one)

here's a video i found in youtube with Alice Sebold talking about the book.

This book is brilliant! I cried at least 5 times whilst reading it which was very embarrassing when I was on a plane but it is a wonderful book. The writing and the descriptions and the whole concept is amazing. I didn't expect this book to move me anywhere near as much as it did just in it's sheer simplicity and the fact it was written from a child's view but I would recommend this to anyone and I am definitely going to read any more of Alice Sebold's books if I can!

I have PMd Withoutwings so will send this on once I receive an address. Thanks again nawoo82 for letting me share this!

Edit 02/07/2007: Withoutwings has asked to be pushed further down the list so I've PMd blackteiwaz for their address. (Posted today 03/07/2007).

I finished reading it today. I didn't cry as much as I thought, but I did think it was a very sad story all through the book. I agree with nawoo82, it can be disturbing sometimes. Thank you for organizing the ring!
I already have celeritas2' address, will send it her way tomorrow. :)

Arrived in the post today from Blackteiwaz, thankyou and thankyou to Nawoo82 for the ring. I thought I would read this book as my fellow New Zealander Peter Jackson is doing a film from this book, so I thought I would read it before it comes out next year. I am pleased to announce that two Kiwi actresses will play major roles in the film as the younger sister of the dead girl and a fellow class mate. Looking forward to reading the book.

The picture is of the Santa Rosa's Ranch in Costa Rica, similar to the postcard Blackteiwaz sent me, thankyou!

BE WARNED - You will not be able to put this book down! I really enjoyed this book, while I was reading it. However after finishing I thought that a lot of it was a bit superficial. The heaven described seemed to me to be how secular people think heaven would be like, so it really did not ring true to me. Some things were quite cheesy, or too convenient, or generally tied together in a rose tinted sort of way. I would call this book a sort of popcorn book, if you get my meaning, like a book to blob out to, get really emotionally involved in because it is so upsetting but in the end get very little out of to reflect on. I did however read the book very quickly and I personally enjoy blobbing out to a book sometimes. I think the movie adaptation could be better than the book, let's see.

I'll post it to Hinerangi tomorrow.

I think I agree with Celeritas' assessment of this as a 'popcorn book'. It is beautifully written, has some moving moments, and certainly holds the attention, but I found it ultimately rather unsatisfying. Perhaps I was expecting too much of it - I've heard it so much praised that I was expecting a far more profound work, and was a little disappointed to find that it's really more suited to a young adult reader.

Will send it off soon as I get the address of the next person.

Got it! Thanks everyone for participating. It's really interesting to hear what all of you thought about this book and how you liked it.

I haven't decided yet what to do with it now. For the moment, I'll keep it on my bookshelf and leave it as available, but I might send it on another trip or wild release it later on.

This book is continuing its little travels around the world.
It is now off to Poobah1 in the USA, happy winner of the Smile Day RABCK contest organised by princess-peapod.

Poobah1, I hope you'll enjoy this book. It's quite easy to read, but also very emotional. Please know that there is no obligation for you to keep this book moving once you've read it. It is now yours to do whatever you want with, so if you want to keep it, please do so.

Happy reading and happy bookcrossing!

Oh nawoo82, I thank you so much for The Lovely Bones. This is the first book I've rec'd from this Smile Day RABCK that I have previously read. Not to be disappointed though, I truly enjoyed the book and have released it more than once into the wild. I love reading all the JE's from this books Ray history and seeing the different view points on the content is awesome. BookCrossing is such a cool commiunity - I love it! I will let this book rest a bit on my cozy shelf until the right opportunity comes up when I can send it onto the next leg of it's worldly journey. I thank you again most definitely and look forward to watching this gem continue its travels.

Best wishes and cheers from: Poobah1 of Minnesota, US

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Now, Juli2007...this one was not on your wishlist as were all the other I've sent. On the off chance that you haven't read it, I thought I'd add it to your pile as it has such a great travel history. It was one of the many , many books I received in the Smile Day RABCK drawing I won in May. I truly thought it would be wrong for me to just wild - release this one and risk it not being journaled. In terms of the read, I did enjoy it but not as much as the masses did. It was an easy read, dark content, but very readable. I hope you enjoy - if you've read it previously...please release it lovingly.
