From the back cover:
In suburban Georgetown a killer's Reeboks whisper on the floor of a posh home...
In a seedy D.C. porno house a patron is swiftly garroted to death...
The next day America learns that two of its Supreme Court justices have been assassinated. And in New Orleans, a young law student prepares a legal brief...
To Darby Shaw it was no more than a legal shot in the dark, a brilliant guess. To the Washington establishment it was polital dynamite. Suddenly Darby is witness to a murder - a murder intended for her. Going underground, she finds there is only one person she can trust - an ambitious reporter after a newsbreak bigger than Watergate - to help her piece together the deadly puzzle. Somewhere between the bayous of Louisiana and the White House's inner sanctums, a violent cover-up is being engineered. For someone has read Darby's brief. Someone who will stop at nothing to destroy the evidence of an unthinkable crime.

This book was quite interesting in the conspiracy theory sort of way. I thought that the chase scenes where Darby is running for her life were interesting as the bad guys were always on her heels.
The problem that I had with this book was that it took a little bit too long to get to the point sometimes. There was just too much details in some spots and not enough action. This book could have lost a chase scene or two and cut out a hundred pages and still been as good.
John Grisham is an exciting writer and I am enjoying reading his collection of works.

I picked this up today at our BookCrossing meeting at Panera Bread in Waldorf, MD. I had a great time today. Thanks for organizing it!
I was not impressed with the other Grisham book I read (The Last Juror), but this one was fun. The twists were decently believable without being too predictable, and none of the characters were unrealistically gifted (a common flaw in thrillers). Though I've never seen the movie, I could picture Julia Roberts as Darby Shaw. My one issue was that I never felt much actual suspense; I was not attached enough to the characters to care much if they made it out okay. That said, this was a nice bit of brain candy. I hear Grisham's older works are his best, so I'm actually looking forward to reading The Client and The Firm, both of which are on my TBR.
This book is part of my Roadtrip Release, 21-24 September 2007. I am driving from Virginia to Illinois and back, dropping books along the way. I will post updated release information when I get home.
