Bought second-hand at the Oxfam shop in Hessle (near Hull, in England). Mr Potok spotted it, in fact, and pointed it out to me, remembering that I'd enjoyed Dinner for Two, by the same author. I read a chapter of this two nights ago, another chapter last night, and then blew off several responsibilities today and finished it. But I have to confess to almost giving up on it entirely at the end of “Friday” (p.97). If this had been the first Mike Gayle I’d read (it *is* the first he wrote), I don’t think I’d have gone on to read any others. I was torn through much of the book between wanting to slap Will and tell him to pull himself together on the one hand, and on the other hand the horrifying suspicion that by skyving off and reading this novel instead of doing chores – I was being just like him! Ack! I did sort of like the ending, although I’m left with a few doubts there... but I expect this book will fade from my memory pretty quickly. I might be interested in re-reading Dinner for Two someday, and would recommend it to others, but this one I'm a lot more ambivalent about. |
