This is a comic fantasy, set after the War Against Evil has been won. The problem is, the War was won using four magical artifacts of great power, and now that those items are all together, they are warping the fabric of Space and Time and causing Bad Things to happen (dinosaurs battling dragons, 747's eclipsing the Moon, an entire wine cellar turning into soft drinks without warning). So the heroes must go out on four anti-quests to lose the magical artifacts.
This is a new and intriguing idea, turning the whole idea of Quest Fantasy on its head. This was Zelazny's final book. He wrote the prelude and bridging material, thought up the basic idea, and turned each quest over to a separate writer. The writers are Robert Asprin, David Drake, Jane Lindskold, and Mike Stackpole. David Drake wrote the afterword after Zelazny's death. This book was very funny and well-written. The quests fit together well.

Oh gosh...I love the cover art! This looks like a fun read. Thank you phantomreader42 for starting this one :-) I will post more as I read.
Although I am enjoying this tale very much, I am going to send it along. I just don't seem to be picking it up for long enough periods of time to be invested in the characters of each story. I am going to buy this for myself because I think it is just a matter of getting through a large pile of rings and rays that all arrived at once keeping me from enjoying this book.
Also, this book reminds me of another book which is sitting in my TBR...Sir Apropos of Nothing. They both have philosophy rolled up to look like science fiction fantasy. I've not read enough of this genre to really know what are recurring themes, but I am drawn to the ones that have less hard science (like Stephanson, which I enjoy but often get bogged down in the techinical stuff) and heavy romance (like the Terry Goodkind books...one was quite enough, thank you).
Anyway...off to quinnsmom. And I'll post another journal entry when I've read my own copy of this book.

I apologize for taking so long to journal the book -- I was gone & when I got back home there it was! I will read quickly and pass along right away. Thanks so much for the opportunity to read!
I'm sorry to have put off journaling for so long. I'm trying to catch up on everything related to bookcrossing today since I was away most of the summer and let things slide. So first, apologies to all of you!
Life goes on even after the story is finished. If you get nothing else out of this book, then take that home with you. I loved this book -- a great takeoff on the usual fantasy quest stories, written by different authors, but bridged together with preludes, interludes by Zelazny. I love Gar Quithnick!!! What a great character!!! I am going to look for more writing by Zelazny, although now I want to find works by the other authors in this book.
moving the book on to krin511, who is generous enough not to have yelled at me for hanging on to this for so long.

Received in today's mail from quinnsmom - Thanks!
Received this in the mail today.
I also love the cover and am eager to get to reading it. Although I have read Asprin and Zelazny in the past, it will be a good introduction to other Science Fiction writers.
More after I read it.
