Titus Groan, heir to Lord Sepulchrave, has just been born. A Groan of the strict lineage, Titus is seventy-seventh, he will inherit the miles of rambling stone and mortar that form Gormenghast Castle, and its surrounding kingdom.
Dreamlike, fantastic and macabre, Mervyn Peake's extraordinary novel - the first in the Gormenghast trilogy - is one of the most astonishing sustained flights of the imagination in modern English fiction.

On its way to abrokenstarr. Hope you enjoy it!
Arrived yesterday. Thanks. Will get to it asap.
Egads. I finished this almost a month ago. I intend to send on this week, response to pm permitting. Just had no time whatsoever. Gasp.
I've been reading this for what feels like forever. Finally plowed through it this week. It's the first book in the Gormenghast trilogy.
I felt that some of the description was fantastic, particularly the description of the kitchen and the workers that have to clean the kitchen and their stone faces. The characters were well depicted and it was an interesting book. Possibly a little long.

Fantasy isn't really my cup of tea but on the whole I did enjoy Titus Groan. I thought the characters and descriptions were excellent and I liked the general bizarreness of the book. Not sure I'll be rushing out to find the second and third in the triology but I might grab them if I come accross them.
Sending to stubee to continue the journey as soon as I can
Hi everyone I've just received another of Shnedwards 1001 bookrings, thank you to bookwormnicky for sending it on. I'll get onto this shortly after I've read the other Shnedwards 1001 bookrings I have in my possession!!!! No on a serious note thank you. :-]
Finished and passed the KT-J.
I loved the book, I hadn't realised it was about Gormenghast until I started reading it, I had heard of the TV show but never actually seen it although I'd heard it was a good show.
I loved the characters well most of them, Steerpike for me was the star of this novel, he's a great character, I loved Fushia with her mood swings and Keda's story intrigued me an awful lot but I hated Mrs Slagg she really did get on my nerves. The rest of the Groan clan where a bit of an enigma I never quite knew how I should feel about them, and Flay and Swelter were just funny as where the Prunesquallors. All in end a great read, now I must get hold of Volume 2 in the trilogy!
Thanks Shnedwards as always for including me in one of your rays! (I'll be reading Michael Houellenbecq's Atomised shortly).

Received from Stubee today. This looks a bit daunting but hopefully it won't take me too long to read!
I really enjoyed this book. It took me a while to get through the first third of the book but then I seemed to get through the rest of it really quickly. The descriptions of the place and the people were incredible and although I didn't really like any of the characters they were all interesting in their general bizarreness!
Thanks shnedwards for another good read! I've PMd ealasaidmae for their address so will hopefully get this sent on shortly.
Edit 1/5/08: This was posted yesterday.

It's here! I'm in the middle of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell now and I'd like to finish that first. Then this will be next! Thanks for the postcard, KT-J.
How bizarre. I feel like I've been *in* Gormenghast; the book's very, very dense! But I really enjoyed it. Peake is a much more skilled and precise writer than I'd expected. I do want to read the others in the trilogy and find out what happens to poor Titus. Just maybe not right away! I think I need a break first.
I have buocl's address and will mail this Tuesday, since Monday's a holiday. I've never understood the concept of honoring veterans by not delivering their mail. But then, there are many things I do not understand.

Just got this from the postman, will read it as soon as I finish The Red Tent. Thanks shnedwards and ealasaidmae!
Hmmmm - I'm not exactly sure of how I feel about Titus Groan. Some characters I loathed (Swelter, Nannie Slagg), some I felt sorry for (Sepulchrave, Flay), very few I actually liked (Keda, Fuschia). I know this wasn't a feel-good book full of lovable characters, and that is OK. I wish I could have sympathy for more of them.
I had a hard time getting into the story at first, but I would like to try the 2nd book. Thanks for giving me the chance to experience Gormenghast.
I have jubby's address - will be in the mail this weekend.

I am most ashamed of myself...
I have tried reading this book over the last several weeks (along with a few others), and have not been able to concentrate on it. Sure, there has been a few monumental life changes (the birth of our son - yay!), but I just can't get my mind to settle on this one.
I even have a copy of part two also (http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/5249737)!
So, I've decided send both of these onto Cat207 (the trilogy are available as one book from my local library), and wish her every success in reading these.
I am hoping I will be able to return to these in the near future.
Thank you for being so patient with me.

Collected from the Post Office today, along with "Gormenghast" - kindly sent by jubby.
Not really my sort of book, but I've read it. I can't see me hanging out to read the next in the series, but I will at some stage - thank you jubby. And thanks to shnedwards for another to mark off the list.
I haven't been able to contact taniazed. I am delivering this to davemurray101 after work tomorrow, so it can continue its journey.

Off to Ireland as a RABCK - hope you enjoy it!
