It is 1945 and ten-year-old Sookan and her family live in Korea which is currently occupied by Japanese forces. When the war ends, Communist troops take over. The family decides to escape to American-controlled South Korea.

It was very exciting to read about Sookan's escape to South Korea, about exciting as anything I've read lately. It was also interesting to read about the hardships endured under Japanese rule in Korea before World War II ended and the onset of Russian rule after World War II ended.
