The blurb:

'A MAN FROM GLASGOW

On the nights when there is a full-moon,
Morrison hears strange laughter.
Some people think that a full-moon
makes madmen excited.
But is Morrison mad?

MACKINTOSH

It started as a joke.
When Walker forced the villagers to build the road
and to pay for it, he thought it was funny.
It ended in death.'

This is a book from Heinemann Educational Books, in the series Heinemann Guided Readers. It is apparently on Intermediate Level 3. :-) I don't know whether the contents were originally short stories or novels, but I think they must have been short stories. These are abridged versions intended for English students (non-native speakers, I think). At the end of each chapter there is a list of a few questions to aid understanding of the text.

The book is a paperback, printed in 1976, but in good condition. The cover shows a photo of a corner of an old building ... maybe a church, it's hard to say as the structure is backlit by the sun.

The book has something written on the inside cover - something really funny. :-) First, the previous owner has written his name and his class in school, plus one more thing :-) and then someone else has added something below it. I put some clear tape over it to preserve it for posterity. :-) This is what it says:
'Knut Kvarstad 2a
KISS über alles!
Tusen takk for lånet. A.O.'

('Takk for lånet' = in this case, 'thank you for lending me this book'.)

I was planning to read this when I bought it, but that was before I realized the stories were abridged. :-) Now I probably won't read it, but hopefully someone else will be interested. :-)

I bought this book at Pepita, a used book store in Oslo, on Friday, February 9th, 2007. They had a sale - a whole bag full of books for only 100 NOK. Irresistible! I managed to cram 32 - count 'em! 32! - books into my bag. :-D

Releasing this as part of the book buffet! :-)
